楽しみましょう。そうしましょう。

Youtubeの音楽チャンネル「The Sound You Need」のコンピレーションアルバムで、主にオーストラリアとヨーロッパからの新進のアーティストの曲を網羅している。全体としては、ダブステやEDMやベースミュージックの要素を取り入れた、UKガラージ、エレクトロポップ、ダウンテンポ、ネオ・ソウルなどなど…。簡単に気に入った曲について触れておこう。

まずは、ダブステがUKガラージを飲み込んだような曲が前半では多く聴け、気分はそれだけでウキウキするのだが、4曲目で若干20歳のKarma Kidが登場し、ピチピチのダブステ曲ながら、東洋的な旋律の「No Qualms」が楽しめる。個人的に強い印象を受けたのが、続くIndian Summer ft. Ginger & Ghostの「Shiner」で、90年代のゴシック系のインディバンドDaisy ChainsawやQueen AdreenaのKatie Jane Garsideのような危なげな声で、危なげな歌を妙なエレクトロニック・サウンドで聴かせる。また、あざとさも吹き飛ばしてしまいそうな「お～！いえ～！あいわな、だんすうぃじゅー！」と連呼するキラーチューン「Say My Name」はOdeszaというシンセ・ポップ系のバンドによるもので、次のJames Blakeのネオアコ版みたいなMansionairの曲も印象的だ。

後半（CDで言うと2枚目のCD）は、Jamiroquaiを連想させるような、フューチャー・ファンク的なFKJ(French Kiwi Juice)の「Learn to Fly」を皮切りに、やや、ダウンテンポやジャズファンク的な曲が多く含まれる。個人的にはHermitudeの「Ukiyo」が陽気なヒップホップなノリなのに和風なメロディで好きで、続くChrome Sparksの「Marijuana」がEWF風なダブステでおもしろいと思う。Flying LotusのBrainfeederレーベルのTaylor McFerrinのジャズファンク系の「The Antinode」も美しく、Toraの琴のような音が背後で流れる繊細なダウンテンポの曲「Overcome」も良い。

こういう中で、日本でもよく知られているアーティストとしては、Loneが最新アルバムからの曲を１曲提供している。ただ、Flumeがチョイチョイとミックスなどで顔を出している曲が含まれているということで、全体の選曲のクロスオーバー感を察していただきたい。個人的には楽しめました。





Let’s Have Fun.

This album is a compilation album of a Youtube music channel, The Sound You Need, and it consists tracks of many of up-and-coming artists and producers mainly from Australia and Europe. Most tracks sound like Dubstep or EDM oriented UK Garage, Electro-Pop, Downtempo, or Neo Soul, and of more variations. I would like to mention on some of the tracks that I like.

The album opens with few of the nice UK Garage sounds being consumed by Dubstep’s influence, until a 20 years old Karma Kid cuts in through with “No Qualms”, a fresh Dubstep track filled with good oriental melodies. And one track that really sticks in my mind is “Shiner” by Indian Summer ft. Ginger & Ghost, the track with a vocal – which reminds me of Daisy Chainsaw’s (or Queen Adreena) Katie Jane Garside’s voice – singing eccentrically a creepy song of weird Electronic sound. The other impressive one is “Say My Name” by a Synth-Pop duo, Odesza, a killer tune not so pushy as it should be even though it sings out loud, ‘I wanna dance with ya~”. Also, there is one track by Mansionair that sounds like Acoustic version of James Blake.

The latter part of the album (which would be CD2 for the CD version), includes more of Jazz, Funk, and Down Tempo tracks including the track like ”Learn to Fly” by FKJ(French Kiwi Juice), the track that reminds me of Future Funk like that of Jamiroquai. My favorite is Hermitude’s “Ukiyo” which is a chirpy taste Hip Hop having a Japanesque tone. Chrome Sparks’ “Marijuana” is an interesting track, which sounds like a Dubstep version of Earth Wind & Fire. Taylor McFerrin from Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder joins in with a very beautiful Jazz Funk track, “The Antinode”, and Tora’s “Overcome” is a sensitive Down Tempo track with a Japanese Koto (traditional stringed instrument) sound in its background.

I should say that Lone is a relatively popular artist –he may be the only popular artist, at least for Japanese listeners – within the artists being included in this album; and his track from the latest album is being compiled in it. Also, Flume is being featured in few of the tracks, and that fact may be saying that this album is filled with such tracks that cross over various types of music styles. Anyways, I am apparently enjoying listening to it.

イノヴェーター

これは、日本限定で発売のR＆Sレーベルのコンピレーションで、歴史あるレーベルのまさに今を知るための1枚となっている。R&Sと言えば、フェラーリのロゴのような馬のマークが印象的で、それも、どうやら設立者が大のフェラーリ好きということからデザインされたらしいという話がおもしろい。80年代の設立当初は、ベルギーというお国柄もあり、主にニュービートやEBMで注目を集め、その後は、アシッドやトランスと言った、個人的にもよく聴いたJam & SpoonやSourceやJoey Beltramが登場し、C.J. Bollandの代表作もR&Sからリリースされている。90年代の中盤までにはデトロイト・テクノのビッグネーム、Model 500の名盤や、Kenny Larkin、69 a.k.a. Carl Craigの作品もリリースし、遂にはWarp契約前のAphex Twinの作品をリリースする。また個人的にはブリープテクノのオリジネイターとも言えるLFOの故Mark BellによるSpeed Jackの作品がここから出ていることも重要なポイントであるし、日本人としては、Ken IshiiやBoom Boom Satellitesの作品も忘れてはならない。そして、2000年の倒産後、2006年に復活した後のR&SからJames Blakeが登場したときは、やはり常にエレクトロニック・ミュージックのフロンティアを切り開くレーベルのパワーは健在だと思い知らされたものだ。

そして、このアルバムにはここ数年の作品を集めているが、ヒップホップ、グライム、ダブステップ、ジャングル、テクノと実に多彩な要素を持つ曲が並んでいる。でも、そこかしこに、懐かしさの余韻をまとう曲がセレクトされているのが嬉しい。Tesselaの「Nancy’s Pantry」はジャングルながら、レイヴな懐かしさがあり、Shanghai Denの「Vale W Group Bench」のデトロイト・テクノがバッドチューニングのラジオから流れるような曲もおもしろい。Paula Templeの「Cloned」もニュービートなハードさが心地よいし、LakkerのIDMも安定の美しさで、Loneの「Vulcan Mill Acid」、そしてMoodymanの声をフィーチャーしたBlawmanの「What You Do With What You Have」はアシッドだ。圧巻はアルバムを締めくくるSpace Dimension ControllerのR&Sからのリリースではないながら、ここに収録されている、まるで近未来ディスコのような曲だ。もちろん、その他にもJames Blakeの雰囲気を持つ楽曲として、Alex Smokeの「Dust」とAirheadの楽曲、Trimbalの曲でHarmonix a.k.a. James Blakeのリミックス曲も含まれている。まさに、新しさの中にも歴史を感じるようなコンピレーションになっていると言えよう。





Innovator

This is a Japan limited compilation album of R&S Records, from which you will be able to hear the most recent music from the long living label. The label’s logo reminds me of Ferrari, and it is said that one of the founders’ love for Ferrari has made it be as so. Being a Belgian label, most of its earliest releases in the late 80’s were of New Beat and EBM, and then followed by Acid and Trance records of artists such like Jam & Spoon, Source, Joey Beltram, and C.J. Bolland -his popular albums were being released by R&S. By the mid 90’s, records of big icons of Detroit Techno such as Model 500, Kenny Larkin, 69 a.k.a. Carl Craig were being released; and soon after, Aphex Twin’s records were released prior to his release from Warp. And not to forget, Mark Bell’s (a member of LFO, the originator of Bleep Techno) Speed Jack’s records were all being released by R&S; and Ken Ishii and Boom Boom Satellites from Japan made many releases from the label too. After experiencing a shut down in 2000, the label was been re-launched in 2006, and then a success by James Blake’s records follows. At this point, it made me confident to say that the label is still powerful enough to open the frontier of the Electronic Music world.

This compilation album consists of tracks by the label’s recent artists, and those tracks possess various musical aspects: Hip Hop, Grime, Dubstep, Jungle, and Techno. However, they are very enjoyable in the sense that many of them bear various old school aspects at the same time. Tessela’s “Nancy’s Pantry” is a Jungle track with a Rave spirit and Shanghai Den’s “Vale W Group Bench” sounds like a Detroit Techno track played by a poorly tuned radio. I love the New Beat oriented hardness of Paula Temple’s “Cloned” and the balanced beauty of Lakker’s IDM. Also, Lone’s “Vulcan Mill Acid” and Blawman’s “What You Do With What You Have” (in which Moodyman’s voice is featured) are definitely Acid tracks. The most impressive is the non- R&S track by Space Dimension Controller, the track which could be expressed as a futuristic Disco music. Not to worry, James Blake oriented tracks: Alex Smoke’s “Dust”, the track by Airhead, and Harmonix’s (a.k.a. James Blake) mix of Trimbal are certainly included in the album, so to make it seem like a mixture of old and new school of the label as a whole.
