22年分のリミックス

1994年から2012年までの長いキャリアの中でリリースされたリミックス曲を集めたCD。古いものでは、1990年の「Sunburst」のレアなミックスがある。あと、10分に及ぶPlastikmanによるミックス（1995は「Musik」がリリースされた頃）は聴き応えがあり、個人的に好きなのはデトロイト・テクノ・フレーヴァー満載の1994年当時のCarl Craigのミックス（「Landcruising」がリリースされた時期）。ディスク２にはプログレッシヴな感じのミックスも多く、あらゆるスタイルでSystem 7の変わらぬトランスの世界が表現がされているのがわかり、持っていて損のないアルバムになっている。お馴染みのSteve Hillageのギターサウンドがどのようにリミックスでは扱われているかを確認してみるのもおもしろい。個人的には、バラバラとリミックスを持つよりまとまっているのが良いと思って買った。





Remixes of 22 Years

The remix tracks of System 7 that have been released within 1994 to 2012 are gathered as an album of 2CDs. The oldest track is a rare remix of “Sunburst” (1990). It is also worth hearing Plastikman’s remix of over 10 minutes (originally, this has been released in 1995 at time when Plastikman’s “Musik” has been released); and my favorite is Detroit Techno flavored remix done by Carl Craig in 1995 (at the time when he has released “Landcruising”). In Disc 2, few remixes are of Progressive flavor, and it is possible to enjoy System 7’s consistent world of trance music interpreted in various music styles. I personally feel fun in picking up how Steve Hillage’s guitar sounds are brought into play in each remixes. Plus, it is quite handy to have the remixes created within 22 years of time span in one package of CD format.

555 / Solar Express

555 vs 777

アメリカ、ミネアポリスのエクスペリメンタル・サイケバンドとも言えるバンド、Food Pyramidのメンバー、 Chris Farstaによるソロプロジェクト、555によるアンビエント・アルバム。全体的にくぐもった波動が脈打つ音は、80年代のリズムマシーンのRoland TR-626によるものらしい。その他、使用している楽器のリストを見てみると、iPad 2、Boss DD-6、MXR Phase-90、Korg MicroKorg XLで、これは結構、シンプルな構成なのではないかと、素人目にもわかる。ただ、その音楽は、昔懐かしい感じの単なるニューエイジ・ミュージック的なというよりは、結構、今風でもあり、複雑な感じもする。

若干、仏教的な雰囲気で胡弓のシンセ版のような音があったり、ボコンボコンというリズムも何か東南アジア風で、カラカラとしたオリエンタルな金属楽器の音もする。若干、羽衣がうねりながら舞うようなアシッドパートもあるかと思えば、Steve HillageのSystem 7にあったような上り龍的なギターもある。６曲目の「CW Celphei Casualty」も、スピリチュアル雰囲気満載なのに、かなり複雑にシンセ音が絡み合って、ハイパー・アシッドな高みにもって行かれる感じがする。瞑想状態と幻覚症状が交互に何度も訪れながら、精神宇宙の深みに引っ張り込まれてしまうようなアルバム。

しかし、これは考えすぎかもしれないが、アーティスト名の555は、あのSystem 7のアルバム「777」を意識してつけられたのだろうか？それとも、アメリカ出身のアーティストなら、System 7ではなく、777というバンド名で同バンドを認識していのかも知れないから、そこから取ったのかも知れない。（System 7は当初、アメリカではSystem Sevenという他のバンドが存在していたため、777名義でアルバムを出す必要があった。777名義で出たデビューアルバムはアルバム名も多分「System 7」ではなく「777」で、そのアルバムのジャケデザインが巻貝の螺旋の中に「777」と記されているだけだった）アルバム内にSteve Hillageリスペクト的な音があったので、つい、そんな風に思ってしまった。そうなると、555のこのアルバムのジャケ・アートもSystem 7の「Power of Seven」や777名義のデビューアルバムのジャケになんとなく、似ていると思えてくる…。





555 vs 777

555 is a solo project of Chris Farsta, a member of an American psychedelic band, Food Pyramid from Minneapolis. This ambient album consists of music tracks with muffled sound of pulsing wave undulation, which seems like being created by an 80’s drum machine, called Roland TR-626. The other devices that have been used are listed as: iPad Generation 2, Boss DD-6, MXR Phase-90, and Korg MicroKorg XL; and it seems to be quite a simple lineup even looking from my inexpert eyes. However, the music tracks created here have something more than those good old new age-like music, and have some modern complexity in them.

I hear sounds resembling Chinese fiddles, oriental beats made by wooden instruments, and clinging sound of Asian bells which all remind me of ritual music of Buddhism. In some acid parts, it sounds as if celestial raiment billowing upwards; and in some parts, I hear a guitar play sounding like a ‘rising dragon’ expressed by Steve Hillage (of System 7). My favorite track is “CW Celphei Casualty”, which has a spiritual feeling with tangling synthesizer sound, rising up to the peak of acid-high destination. This album lets you experience meditation and hallucination mutually, and pulls you into the depth of inner universe.

By the way, one question came up to my mind. Could it be like by any chance that 555 has been named after “777” of System 7? Chris Farsta should be more aware of 777 rather than System 7, since he is from U.S.A. (Initially, System 7 could not release their album under the name of System 7 in U.S., since there was another band called System Seven there. Therefore, confusingly enough, System 7 has released its debut album as 777’s “777”, while released as System 7’s “System 7” in countries outside U.S.A. The album’s cover art only shows the logo of 777 on the picture of a spirally coiled shell as in the picture above). Since 555 includes some guitar phrases that resemble with that of Steve Hillage in its album, I started to think that 555 may have some kind of respect towards 777 i.e. System 7. And now, I even feel that the cover art of 555’s album looks similar to that of System 7’s “Power of Seven”.
