Ornamentsは2008年頃からダブテクノやディープ・ミニマルのレコードをリリースしてきたベルリンのレーベルで、本ブログでも紹介したMarko Fürstenbergもいくつかのリリースをこのレーベルから行っている。そして、今回紹介するアルバムは2～3年に一度のペースでリリースされる、「Ornaments Symphony」シリーズという同レーベルのショーケース的なミックスCDの第3弾となる。Echocordからもリリース作品のあるLuke Hessも前のバージョンにあたる「Ornaments Symphony 2」のミックスを手掛けている。

今回のRhauderによるミックスは2枚組CDとなっていて、それぞれで微妙にテイストの違うミックスが収録されている。まずディスク１のミックスは、同レーベルのyouAND:THEMACHINESの楽曲を曲と曲の間のブリッジとしても多用し、比較的ダブテクノ色の強いアトモスフェリックな印象に仕上がっている。ミックスの始めの方はダブテクノの世界がディープに広がるが、中盤でyouAND:THEMACHINESの「Sway」が登場し、いかにもDerrick Mayの「Strings of Life」的なピアノ音で、その世界に変化を与えている。そして、その後のCarlos Nilmmnsの「Light and Shadow」と「The Longer We Wait」で、デトロイトテクノ的な美しい流れが頂点に達する。終盤の「“Sansula” (Basic Soul Unit Remix)」はDrexciya風な不気味さがあり、最後はGlobal Communicationの「76：14」をブルース調にしたような「1984」で幕を閉じる。

ディスク２はThe Analog Roland Orchestraの曲が多く使われていて、ディスク１よりは、ダンサブルで、なおかつテクノやエレクトロの要素が強くなっているように感じる。ミックス中盤でThe Analog Roland Orchestraの「Memoryman」がエレクトロなムードを盛り上げ、そこから繋がるMod. Civilの「Sunbeam」は、あのPerfumeが唄いそうなレベルのエレクトロ感でおもしろい。そして、このエレクトロ・フェーズの後に続く「Wax」のRedshape（Delsinのミニマル異星体）によるリミックスから「Drift」のSteve Bugによるリミックスまでの流れはミニマル・テクノ的なハイライトとなる。ミックスの最後はRhauderとPaul St. Hilaireのコラボによるディープすぎるダブテクノだ。このように聴くと、まさにこれはOrnamentsがレーベルとしてもつ「静」と「動」の側面を2枚のディスクそれぞれで表現したような、そんな作品と言える。








A Showcase of ‘Tranquility’ and ‘Dynamism’

Ornaments is a Berlin based label which has been releasing DubTechno and Minimal records - including Marko Fürstenberg’s releases - since 2008. This is the latest album of “Ornaments Symphony” series, the label’s showcase mix CDs that are released once every 2~3 years. Luke Hess (known for few releases from Echocord) has mixed the last version of the series, which is “Ornaments Symphony 2”.

As for this version, Rhauder provides mixes of two different moods in two separate CDs respectively. In CD1, he makes good use of youAND:THEMACHINES’ tracks, even as bridges between different artists’ tracks, and the overall atmosphere of the mix is pretty much oriented to DubTechno. Deepness of DubTechno diffuses as the mix goes on, until youAND:THEMACHINES’ “Sway” starts to play a piano that sounds like the one you would hear in Derrick May’s “Strings of Life”. Then follow are “Light and Shadow” and “The Longer We Wait” by Carlos Nilmmns, which by both create a beautiful climax of the mix to flow in to the world of Detroit Techno. “Sansula (Basic Soul Unit Remix)” which comes at the end of the mix is eerie as some of Drexciya’s tracks, and the closer, “1984” sounds like a Bluesy version of Global Communication’s “76:14”.

I can hear much from The Analog Roland Orchestra in CD2, and feel that the mix here is more Electro and Techno oriented, and danceable than that of CD1. The Analog Roland Orchestra’s “Memoryman” maximizes the Electro mood in the mix, and “Sunbeam” of Mod. Civil which follows sounds like a track that could be sang by Perfume (a Japanese Electro Pop girl group; see their video HERE). After this Electro phase, the flow starting with Redshape’s (whom I call as an extraterrestrial Minimal being of Delsin) remix of “Wax” and ending with Steve Bug’s remix of “Drift” would be the high-light of the Minimal Techno phase in the mix. The closer is Rhauder’s deep DubTechno track which features St. Paul Hilaire. Thus, by providing two separate mixes of two different moods as this, Rhauder might have tried to express the label’s two characteristic aspects, which namely are aspects of ‘tranquility’ and ‘dynamism’.

インナースペースへとつながるミニマル・テクノ

Melchior Productions LtdことThomas Melchiorはドイツ出身で、当初はジャズやファンク周辺のバンドなどで活躍していた。90年代初頭になりOhm名義でジャズやファンクの要素をエレクトロニクスに巻き込み、レフトフィールドな作品をリリース。これが、トリップホップの流れにも影響を与えたと言われている。その後、Baby Ford（Soul Capsuleでも共に活動をしていて、個人的に大好きなZIPやBen UFOのミックスにも彼らの曲はフィーチャーされている）との出会い以降、彼の音楽はグッと電子寄りになり、ミニマルなスタイルも加速して行く。今回紹介するこのアルバムは、彼が10年以上前からリリースを重ねて来ているPerlonから2014年にリリースされた「Meditation」シリーズのEPを1枚のアルバムにまとめたものだ。

まず、1曲目から90年代初頭に世を席巻したMixmaster MorrisのThe Irresistible Forceさながらのチルアウト感覚で、瞑想を促すようなトランシーなミニマル・トラックで始まる。続く「Meditation 2」はいかにもPerlonらしいミニマルなノリだが、即興ピアノのようなフレーズが印象的で、Sweet Exorcistの不気味なブリープ曲に近い雰囲気を醸し出している。「Meditation 3」では、エコーのかかった男性の声がインナースペースを意識させ、「Meditation 4」は女性の深呼吸音で始まり、官能的な呪文が唱えられるようなディープでスモーキーな曲となっている。「Meditation 5」はほんのりダブテクノを意識しつつも昇天するような軽やかさで展開されるハウストラックだ。そして、最後はアフリカンな子供達の歌声と呪術的な歌声がトライバル・トランスな高みへと誘うような曲で締めくくられる。いずれの曲も、ミニマルを基調としながら、色々なタイプの瞑想音楽を目指したような感じがする。この作品を聴いて、自分に合ったメディテーションを探してみるのもいいかも知れない。









Minimal Techno Connected to Your ‘Inner Space’

Thomas Melchior of Melchior Productions Ltd from Germany has started his carrier as a member of a Jazz/Funk oriented band. In the early 90’s, under the project name Ohm, he has made Jazz and Funk merge with factors of Electronic music, and has released few records of that line which is often referred to as Leftfield music. It is also said that such records may have opened a way for Trip Hop to emerge out. His music then has been pushed more towards Electronic and Minimal fields, since his acquaintance with Baby Ford (plays together as Soul Capsule; their music can be heard in ZIP and Ben UFO’s mixes). This album is a collection of “Meditation” EPs that have been released in 2014 from Perlon, the label from which he had been releasing his records since more than 10 years ago.

The opener track of the album is a Trance/Minimal track which is quite a Chill-out track that could lead you to a good meditative state, likely as Mixmaster Morris’ The Irresistible Force has done for you in the 90’s. “Meditation 2” is a track with Perlon-like Minimal bounces accompanied with some improvised piano phrases, and sounds freaky as early Sweet Exorcist’s bleepy tracks. In “Meditation 3”, a narrative echoing reminds you of your ‘Inner Space’, and “Meditation 4” starts with a female’s expiratory sound and then there appears a sensual spell-chanting voice, which leads you to a smoky deepness. “Meditation 5” is an uplifting House track fringed with traits of DubTechno. The closer track features singing voices of African children and shamens, that gradually maximize the spirit of Tribal Trance till its end. All of the tracks in the album are Minimal at their basics, but they seem to vary in types when thought in terms of Meditational Music. Try to find your best fit sound for meditation by listening to this album.
