バロウズとダブで中毒

正直言うと、William S. Burroughsの作品を本気で読んだことも、聴いたこともないが（映画「裸のランチ」は観たが…）、とにかく彼が（常人からすると）空中分解をしているような狂気にありながら、異様な存在感と説得力を持つ存在であることだけは理解していた。彼は、戦後のアメリカのビート・ジェネレーションの中心人物とされ、ビートカルチャーにおける、「改革主義」「非物質主義」「トランスジェンダー」「実験的ジャンキー」「宗教趣味」などと言った要素を、自身の妻殺しという体験を伴えて体現しているような人らしい。

彼の「音楽的」な貢献といえば、ポエトリーリーディングの録音であり、彼特有のリズム感や陰影などに加えて、録音テープのカットアップによる音声コラージュ的なアプローチも独特である。そんなバロウズの音声をフィーチャーしながら、スイスのダブ・バンド、Dub Spencer & Trance Hillがバロウズの生誕100周年を記念して作成したのが、このアルバム。Dub Spencer & Trance Hillはこれまでにも色々なアーティスト（The ClashやDeep Purpleなど）の作品をダブ解釈してアルバムなどをリリースして来たバンドだ。ただし、今回のアルバムはそれまでのような単なるカバーアルバム的な感じはなく、異次元にまで広がるダブサウンドの濃溶液の中でバロウズのスポークンワーズが浮かんでは沈みの繰り返しをしながら、心地よく溺れているように聴こえる。レゲエの快楽に電子宇宙の浮遊感、バロウズの恍惚と怒りと混乱の肉声が呪文のように渦巻く世界。非常に中毒性の高い要注意作品である。





Burroughs & Dub Addict

To tell the truth, I am not much acquainted with William S. Burroughs’ literatures or with his spoken words performances. However, it is my understanding that he has this self-disintegrating insanity in himself, while being grotesquely a strong figure with so much of explicitness at the same time. He is known to be one of the main figures of Beat Generation, which is a group of American post-World War II writers who had inspired elements of “Beat Culture”: innovation, anti-materialism, transgender, drug experimentation, pro-religion, etc. It is said that Burroughs’ experience of killing his second wife by his gun had lead him to embody such elements of “Beat Culture”.

The recordings of his poetry reading performances, cut up into bits, creating voice collages have unique rhythms of deep and shallow, and they are counted as a type of “musical” contribution done by him. A Dub band called Dub Spencer & Trance Hill from Switzerland features such voices of Burroughs in their album, in his memorial 100th birth year. The band is known for releasing albums featuring Dub-interpreted tracks of well-known artists’ (like The Clash and Deep Purple) works. However, in this album’s case, it does not sound like a mere parody stuff. Burroughs’ spoken words seem to drown and buoy lusciously in the concentrated solution of Dub sounds which diffuse over to another dimensions of unknown. In this album, one can experience bliss of deep Reggae grooves and anacatesthesia in electronic universes, together with Burroughs’ speech of ecstasy, anger, and confusion rolling in spirals like a chant. It is very addictive that you would have to be careful.

モジュラー・シンセ愛

自身がプロデュースするモジュラーシンセのドキュメンタリー映画なるものの、サントラ盤。この映画を見てはいないが、きっと、シンセ・マニアには興味深い内容になっているのだと思う。ブルーレイなどもあるようなので、興味のある方にはぜひ。ジャケの中面には、色々と技術的なことも記載されているので、そこにあるキーワードも交えつつ各曲の紹介をする。

何が良いかと言えば、全曲、音質がとてもクリアでクリーン。これは、かなりのポイントで、恋に落ちてもおかしくない美しさ。あと、上記の説明では、わかりにくいが、どの曲も古臭く退屈なシンセポップという印象が薄いので、シンセ・マニアでなくとも、ひとつのエレクトロ作品として楽しめる。





Love for Modular Synthesizers

This is a soundtrack album for the documentary film that has been produced by the artist himself, dealing with techniques of modular synthesizers. I have not seen the film yet, but it is possible to imagine that devoted fans of synthesizers will love the film. It is fortunate that it is available in DVDs and Blu-rays, now. There are some technical comments written for every tracks of the album on the inner pages of the CD cover; so I will pick up some keywords from there and note them together with my musical comments on each tracks.

4. Drexciya-like flabby sounds or sounds reminding me of vacuum tubes

What impressed me the most about this album was the clearness and cleanness of its sound. This point is the very point that I would like to recommend on. You could fall in love with it. Moreover, every tracks do not sound as out dated or boring as most of synth pop works may sound, so it is well entertaining also to listen as a type of Electro album.
