彩を増すダブテクノ

Fluxion、Quantec、Luke Hessなど、数多くのダブテクノ・アーティストの作品をリリースし、もはや、ダブテクノ・レーベル界の代表格ともいえる、Echocordの設立者であるKenneth Christiansenと、同じくダブテクノ系のレーベルBaum Recordsのオーナーであり、Resoeとしても知られるDennis BøgによるユニットPattern Repeatによるデビューアルバム。そして、このPattern Repeatは彼らによる作品がリリースされるレーベル名にもなっている。当然のことながら、このような二人によるアルバムなので、ダブテクノ・アルバムのはずだが、聴いてみると、昨今のダブテクノの多様性をもっと先へと推し進めるような、実に多彩な風味を持つ楽曲が満載であることがわかる。

アルバムはまず、インダストリアルのような攻撃的なビートで始まり、常に鉄筋が擦れるような音のなか、後からダブテクノが合流するという構成の「00/1B」から始まる。このアルバムのなかの曲で常にあるのは、脈打つダブテクノのビートとフィールドレコーディングで得られたような機械や金属片による音、あるいは人間の声の断片のコラージュだ。それらの基本要素のうえに、あらゆるサウンド・ストラクチャーを構築して各曲を多彩な印象に仕上げている。「00/3B」ではファンクネスを感じ、「00/7A」はデトロイト・テクノ的にパーカッシヴでありながら、凶悪なモーター音が襲って来る。個人的に一番、スリリングに感じるのは、最初は静かなビートで始まる「00/2B」で、次第に物悲しさに溶け込み、常軌を逸したようなピアノ音が空間を切り裂くなか、電子の塊が時折、流れ星のように流れるような世界観がなんともいえない。このアルバムの中でも一番レゲエ的なのが「00/2A」だが、それでも短調さはなく、まるで、電車の車窓から見る景色がみるみる変化していくような曲だ。終盤の「00/7B」はDrexciyaの不気味な深海の音を連想させるものがあり、最後の「00/5B」は、Robert Hoodのようなミニマルビートが時を刻むなか、暗黒の電子の嵐があらゆる金属片や隕石を巻き込んでいくようなダイナミズムがある。

Echocordからは、2011年に「Echocord・Jubilee Comp.」という、ダブテクノのコンピレーションアルバムが出たが、そこには実に様々なテイストのダブテクノが収録されていて、非常に楽しめたのを覚えている。そして、そのコンピレーションにあった多彩さが更に広がっただけでなく、エクスペリメンタル性がかなり深まったアルバムがこの「Pattern Repeat」のように感じる。





More Color to DubTechno

This album is a debut album of Pattern Repeat, a duo formed by Kenneth Christiansen who is the founder of Echocord (one of the primal DubTechno label known by releasing many records of artists like Fluxion, Quantec, and Luke Hess) and Dennis Bøg (a.k.a. Resoe) also known as an owner of another DubTechno label, Baum Records. Pattern Repeat is also the label’s name from which all of their records will be released. It is quite predictable that their album should sound pretty much of DubTechno, but it is unexpectedly colorful in such a sense that it includes variety of tracks that may spread out and push forward DubTechno’s diversity of today.

The opener track, “00/1B” starts with aggressive Industrial beats, while steel bars keep shiiiiing in the background as the phase of DubTechno joins later in the track. The tracks in the album consistently pound their DubTechno based beats, and are being reinforced well by collage of fragmental human voice samples and field recorded sound bits of metallic and mechanical splinters. On to these basic factors, different sound structures are being built so to create impressive tracks of various tastes. You will find some Funk in “00/3B” and “00/7A” is percussive as Detroit Techno, but assaults you with brutal sounds of motors. Enchanting is the track, “00/2B” which starts with silent beats that gradually merge in to plaintiveness, and aberrant piano tunes slice the atmosphere while dollops of electrons fall like shooting stars. “00/2A” is the most Reggae oriented track in the album, but is not so ho-hum as it would be; it is as if seeing a scenery changing progressively when you are looking outside from a running train’s window. Approaching towards the end, the album plays “00/7B” which sounds eerie as Drexciya of deep water, and the closer, “00/5B” pounds its time with Robert Hood-ish minimal beats, then becoming dynamic as a dark electron storm engulfing nebulas and steel bits.

A compilation album called “Echocord・Jubilee Comp.” (2010) is a very enjoyable album of Echocord, which includes DubTechno of various tastes. Comparing with this album, I feel that Pattern Repeat’s album not only enables DubTechno’s colorfulness to stretch out, but it deepens a possible experimental approach of the music.

Aphex Twin / Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments Pt.2

14年間

「Syro」のときはあまりの大騒ぎだったので、ブログに感想をとやかく書かなかった。ただ、あのアルバムを聴いて誰もが確信したことはきっと、たとえ13年のブランクがあったとしても彼の才能の光は消えていなかったということだろう。かつて一世を風靡したアーティストが長いブランクを経て曲を出しても、それが昔の栄光に毛が生えたようなものに過ぎなかったというケースはいくらでも見たことがある。しかし、Aphex Twinの「Syro」の場合、彼独特の音楽世界は複雑さを増し、その情報量も増え、更には、より猥褻な仕上がりに昇華され、現代的な音楽の域に量子飛躍をしたような作品となった。そして、そのアルバムから4か月が過ぎて出されたこのEPをどうとらえるべきか…？

まず言えることは、EPなりに短い曲が多数を占めているということと、ジャケットの色も黒いし、「Syro」のようにキラキラした曲は、あまり収録されていないということ。そして、アルバムの1曲目の「diskhat ALL prepared1mixed 13」からは、タイトルにもあるように、プリペアド・ピアノの音が響き出し、それはこのEP全体の質感を支配しはじめる。「disk prep calrec2 barn dance [slo]」は長めの曲だが、オリエンタルなダンス音楽のようにも聴こえ、「Diskprept1」はほんのりと漂うメランコリーが14年前にリリースされたアルバム「drukqs」に収録されていてもおかしくないような雰囲気の曲だ。

いくつかのレヴューでは、多分、「drukqs」以降、出しそびれていたEPがこのタイミングで出されたのではないか、と言われてしまうかも知れない。でも、「Syro」のような飛躍をみた作品が既に出されている以上、この後、14年間の空白を埋めるように、その間に出しそびれていたような作品が仮にリリースされたとしても、あまり文句を言う人はいないと思う。





14 Years

I had my mouth shut when “Syro” was being released, because there were too many people talking about it at that time. Yet, I am sure that everyone will agree that his brilliance has never ceased even after thirteen years of quiescence. It is common that an artist, once being at a high point of popularity, could come back after a long period of inactive years, but with a song which is merely a bit better version of the best of his past. However, in the case of Aphex Twin’s “Syro”, it seems like that his unique musical dimension has been enriched in respect of the amount of information and its complexity, and is even being sublimated to some extent of sexiness, thus enabling a quantum leap to take place, as to make his music reach the present trend. And four months have passed after this album’s release. And what would we expect from this new EP, “Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments Pt.2” ?

Firstly, by it being released as an EP, many of the tracks included here are of short tracks, and the cover is dark in color as if indicating that none of the tracks are like glittering tracks such as found in “Syro”. As it may be expected from its title, much could be heard from a prepared piano in the opener track “diskhat ALL prepared1mixed 13”, so does the whole mood of the EP seem to be under the influence of the instrument’s sound. A rather long track, “disk prep calrec2 barn dance [slo]” sounds like a dance music with an oriental flavor, and “Diskprept1” is a slightly melancholic track that sounds like it should have been included in the album “drukqs” which has been released 14 years ago.

There might be a possibility that some reviews would start saying that this may be an EP that had missed a chance to be released after “drukqs”. However, given that an album of such a leap as “Syro” has already being released, I would think that no one will give a fuss even though the old tracks kept in his back door are being released from here on, only if such is done to fill in the blank 14 years of Aphex Twin.
