ここ最近、古い作品のリマスター版をTresorやSRX（主にリイシューを専門とするSurgeonのレーベル）からいくつかリリースをしているSurgeon。彼の1997年から1999年の3枚のアルバムをCDでボックスにまとめたリマスター版がTresorから発売となる。リマスターはエレクトロニック・ミュージック界で数多くのマスタリングを手掛けたことで知られるMatt Coltonによる（最近ではSquarepusherの「Damogen Furies」のマスタリングもしているが、他にもPerc Trax、perc、Inigo Kennedy、SBTRKT、objekt、V/Vm、Black Rain、Lussuria、Shinichi Atobe、Andy Stottなど、ここで紹介した作品の多くも手掛けている）。このボックスに含まれるアルバムはSurgeonによるポスト・インダストリアルのトリロジーとも言える3作品で、まず1枚目の「Basictonalvocabulary」（1997年）は、重さというよりは、鋭利で乾いたテクノビートにクラウトロック風なギターの断片が踊る「Krautrock」や、スティールパンの軽やかな音色のように弦の音が乱舞する「9 Hours into the Future」など、個性的な曲が多い。続く「Balance」（1998年）は、地下工場の機械のような、重く、高速なビートに、金属が擦れる音が妙なアンビエンスを醸し出しているような曲が多く収録されているアルバム。そして、「Force + Form」（1999年）は、よりインダストリアル色が強くなってはいるが、トライバルな要素が顔を見せる作品。最後の曲の「At the Heart of it All」はデトロイトテクノの優雅さにURのようなトライバルなビートが融合した繊細な曲で、個人的には大好きな曲だ。これら、3つのアルバムのオリジナル作を全てもっていたとしても、テクノ・ファンなら絶対欲しいと思えるボックスだと、自分は思う。
Recently, quite a number of Surgeon’s past releases are being reissued from Tresor and SRX (Surgeon’s label for releasing reissues). This time, Tresor is releasing Surgeon’s three albums that have been released in years from 1997 to 1999. All of them will be remastered and will be packed in a box of CDs. The remastering work is done by Matt Colton known well for mastering many Electronic music pieces (one of the latest piece is Squarepusher’s “Damogen Furies”, and also many other are referred to in my past posts: Perc Trax, perc, Inigo Kennedy, SBTRKT, object, V/Vm, Black Rain, Lussuria, Shinichi Atobe, and Andy Stott). The three albums packed in this box are all excellent as may well said so to compose Surgeon’s Trilogy of Post-Industrial Music. Firstly, “Basictonalvocabulary” (1997) consists of Techno tracks of dehydrated –meaning not so heavy- and sharp beats, but many of those possess interesting factors: sounds of Krautrock guitars dance in “Krautrock” and string sounds bounce like steelpan sounds in “9 Hours into the Future”. In the next album, “Balance” (1998), heavy machineries of underground factory pump their beats in high frequency, while chafing sounds of metals create a slight Ambient feel. “Force + Form”（1999）is the album in which Industrial hardness gets more intense, juxtaposing well with Tribal aspects. My favorite is the closer track, “At the Heart of it All”, an elaborate piece in which Underground Resistance-like Tribal beats bounce as Detroit Techno flow gracefully. As long as you are a Techno freak, you may want to get this CD box, even if you already have the originals of these three albums.

Daniel Avery / New Energy (Collected Remixes)

テクノの解釈
Daniel Averyは Paul Woolfordの「Erotic Discourse」が好きだと公言しているが、彼のデビューアルバムである「Drone Logic」（2013）はミニマル・テクノではありながらも、どうもChemical BrothersやNew Orderの香りがするアルバムである。しかも、デトロイト・テクノ的な、それもCarl Craig以降のセカンド・ウェーブのスタンスに近い柔軟性をもって、レイヴやテックハウスの背中のうえに横たわるような、そんな音楽でもあるようにも感じた。そして、本アルバムは、ミニマル～インダストリアルを縦断するように、多彩なプロデューサーによってリミックスされた、彼の楽曲を集めた２枚組となっている。まず、Roman Flügelによるリミックスは有名だが、その他にも、彼の曲のリミックスを希望するDJやプロデューサーの数は増えて行き、せっかくなので、未発表ミックスも加えて、アルバムという形でのリリースをするということに至ったようだ。
ディスク１の曲は比較的、原曲に寄り添うようなものが多く、１曲目はDaniel Averyのポストパンク的な曲とも親和性の高い、反復エレクトロ・ビートのFactory Floorによるリミックスとなっている。続く、Roman Flügelによる９分にも及ぶリミックスは曲の終盤に行くにつれ、クラウトロックがサイケの異次元へと迷い込む。また、「Drone Logic」内の比較的アンビエント寄りの曲をVolte-Face（新人）とSilent Servantが硬派で暗めのテクノに変換しているのがかっこいい。後半はインパクトのある曲揃いで、Matt Walshによるリミックスは重たいビートにレイヴとアシッドの圧迫感がボディーブローのように効いて来る。KiNKSによるリミックスも、彼らしい電子の破片が乱舞するレフトフィールド感満載な感じが良い。そして、ディスク１の締めくくりはErol Alkanのサイケ・ロック・バンド、Beyond the Wizard’s Sleeveによるサイケ・リミックスで聴き応え十分だ。ディスク２では、更に重さを増したリメイクに近い楽曲が顔を揃える。ベルギーの腐敗した地下室的なテクノ・レーベルTOKENからのリリースでも知られるRødhådをはじめ、インダストリアル勢では、percやPowellがかなりハードなリメイク曲を提供している。Ricardo Tobarは原曲の幻想的な上澄みだけを残して独自の複雑にねじれたビートを展開し、Conforceは機械的ミニマルで応酬する。Special Request（a.k.a. Paul Woolford）による「Taste」の原曲は2012年にリリースされたEPの中の曲で、ポストパンク的な雰囲気を持っているが、Paul Woolfordはそれを見事なエレクトロニック・グルーヴが展開される楽曲へと変えている。これだけ、豪華なリミックス集なだけに、原曲を聴いたことのない人も、こちらのリミックス集を聴いてみて、各曲からにじみ出るDaniel Averyの魅力を愉しんでみてはいかがだろうか。
Interpreting Techno
Daniel Avery admits that Paul Woolford’s “Erotic Discourse” is one of his favorite modern classics, and his debut album “Drone Logic” (2013) plays much of Techno, while in some parts, I find tints of Chemical Brothers and New Order. And even to add more to it, the music there sounds like the second wave Detroit Techno, such that has started with Carl Craig, flexibly lying on backs of Rave and TechHouse. This album, “New Energy (Collective Remixes)” consists of Daniel Avery’s tracks being mixed by various DJs and producers crossing over the fields of Minimal to Industrial. I guess Roman Flügel’s remix is famous by now, but it is said that quite a number of DJs and producers went on to remix his tracks, so came an idea of releasing those in a form of an album by adding few of the unheard ones also.
Many tracks in Disc 1 of the album are remixes that sound pretty close to the originals. The opener track is a remix by Factory Floor whose repetitive Electronic beats have affinity with Daniel Avery’s Post-Punk oriented tracks. The following 9 minutes remix by Roman Flügel leads Krautrock aspects into a psychedelic perplexity as the track approaches to its end. The way how Volte-Face (a new-comer) and Silent Servant transform Ambient oriented tracks from “Drone Logic” to hard and dark Techno tracks is pretty charming. The last three tracks of the disc are quite powerful. The remix by Matt Walsh has heavy beats with body-blowing intensities of Rave and Acid. KiNKS’ remix is Leftfield as ever, filled with Electronic debris dancing around. The closer of Disc 1 is an impressive remix by Erol Alkan’s Psychedelic Rock band, Beyond the Wizard’s Sleeve. Disc 2 consists of tracks of heavier beats and are more like remakes of the originals. Those heavy tracks are done by Rødhåd from TOKEN, a Techno label from a rotten cellar of Belgium, and well-known Industrial figures, perc and Powell. Ricardo Tobar only utilizes the romantic portion of the original track and keeps on playing his tangling beats. And not to forget, Conforce’s machine-driven minimalism is intense as always. “Taste” is a Post-Punk oriented track included in the EP released in 2012, and is transformed into a track with such an Electronic groove by being remixed by Special Request (a.k.a. Paul Woolford). Even if you have never heard of Daniel Avery, just try to listen to this remix album which consists of gorgeous remixes as such, then you may find what makes attractive about Daniel Avery.
