チープなうえに「Xファイル」的
まず、このアルバムを聴いて思い出したのが、シカゴのレーベルL.I.E.S.（Long Island Electrical System）のコンピレーションアルバム「American Noise」だ。ポストパンクのような、エクスペリメンタルな意識も持ちつつ、アナログ音楽の要素でハウスミュージックを構築しているとでも言うべきか。アルバムの全ての曲がまるで、カセットテープに録音された様々な音楽を切り刻み、繋ぎ合わせたようなプリミティブさを持ち、ホコリっぽいヒス音が楽曲を通して聴こえ、メロディもテープが緩んだときのように歪んでいる。新聞紙を切り刻んでコラージュを作るかのごとく、カセット音源をアナログシンセの接着剤を使って繋ぎ合わせて、アシッドハウスやテクノ音楽を作ろうとしているような、そんな印象のアルバムだ。
また、アルバムに収録の曲のタイトルが、あのSF連続ドラマ「Xファイル」に登場する端役の名前ばかりになっているのがおもしろい。ただし、ドラマに登場の役名だけではなく、実際、役を演じた役者名も曲名になっているのが、マニアックなところだ。調べてみると「Xファイル」全シリーズの中のシーズン３～４のエピソードに登場するキャラクター名が多くの曲のタイトルに使われているようだ。確かに、このシーズンのエピソードは異星人と人間のハイブリッドを生み出す実験や、人間が異星人化するウイルスなどが登場し、シーズン９まで続く「Xファイル」シリーズの中でも一番スリリングなシーズンとも言える。アルバムのオープニングの曲の名前になっている「Peter Tanaka」は喉から異星人の子供が飛び出るという、映画「エイリアン」まがいの参事に見舞われるキャラクターで、端役といえども印象に残りやすいキャラクターだ。「Teena Mulder」はモルダー捜査官のお母さんの名前で、アルバムの中でもアンビエントで昼寝をしているときのような安らぎを感じる曲になっている。ただ、その他の曲がどこまで題名になったキャラクターのイメージに合わせて作られたのかは不明だ。各曲の題名になっているキャラクターが「Xファイル」のどのエピソードに登場したかは下記リストで確認していただきたい。（ちなみに、各エピソードの詳細は日本語ではなかったので、エピソード一覧から、ご参照のほど→「エピソード一覧」 ）そして、アルバムの曲のMVの3部作も「Xファイル」を意識しているような、してないようなおもしろさがあるので、ぜひ見ていただきたい。

Cheap, but like “X-Files”
When I first heard this album, I was reminded of a compilation album, “American Noise” that has been released from the label called L.I.E.S.（Long Island Electrical System）from Chicago. The music of the album could consist of Experimental approaches which look similar to what we find in PostPunk music, yet it builds itself towards various forms of House music by exploiting aspects of analog music. All of the tracks in the album sound pretty cheap as if cut-up ends of music taken from cassette tapes are all pasted together. You can hear dusty hissing sounds and deformed melodies are like as if hearing them on loose tapes running in cassette tapes. Just like creating a collage work by cut bits of newspapers, bits of music taken from cassettes are put together by a glue of analog synth sounds, and they end up to form Acid House or Techno music. All of the tracks in this album just sound like so.
Another interesting point about this album is that names of minor role characters who appear in the famous Sci-Fi TV series, “X-Files” are given to all of the tracks’ titles in the album. It is even maniac in the sense that the names given are not only the names of the characters appearing in the plays, but are names of the actors playing their roles in the plays. It seems that most of the titles are names of characters who appear during season 3 to 4 of “X-Files”. In these seasons, hybrids between humans and extraterrestrial beings are being experimented and virus which transform humans into aliens start to spread around. It could be said that these are the most exciting parts in the overall plot of “X-Files” which lasts until season 9. The opening track of the album is titled as “Peter Tanaka”, which is the name of the character from whose throat a larva of an alien bursts out (disastrous as in the case of the film, “Aliens”); so he is a well-remembered character, I should say. Teena Mulder is agent Mulder’s mother’s name, and the track which has her name is a peaceful Ambient track that you might want to hear before taking a nap. Yet, I am not sure whether all tracks are being created precisely as to fit the corresponding moods of the characters. In order to let you know more about the characters whose names are being used as track titles, I have added the information of episode numbers of “X-Files” beside the track titles. And the music videos created for the album are quite interesting; I would not deny that these have the same mood as the TV series footages.

個人的には、Conforceのデビューアルバムである「Machine Conspiracy」は2010年代のお気に入りアルバムのひとつでもある。IDMとダブテクノの持つ霊妙なアトモスフェリックな要素を見事に連動させ、John Beltranにも通じるエレガントさをまとう作品だ。このデビュー作は、ダブテクノ系のアーティストのリリースが多いレーベル、Meanwhileからのリリースだったが、2011年以降ConforceとしてはDelsinから、ややテクノ寄りの「Escapism」（2011）、ダークな雰囲気のIDMの「Kinetic Image」（2013）をリリース。更にダブテクノのEchocordからはSilent Harbourとして、海に沈んだIDMのような世界が広がるアルバム（2012）や、Versalife名義ではエレクトロにシフトしたアルバム「Vantage Point」（2013）のリリースもしている。これらの作品からも、ConforceことBoris Bunnikが常にダブテクノ、IDM、エレクトロを縦断し彷徨い続けているのはわかるが、「Machine Conspiracy」が持つような優雅さはこれらの作品からは、あまり感じられなかった。しかし、本作では「Machine Conspiracy」にあったConforceの音楽の美しさの源流が呼び起こされ、それにSilent Harbourのようなディープさが加わわった感じがする。去年Delsinから「Machine Conspiracy」のリイシューがあっただけに、本作がまるで、それの続編のようにも思えて嬉しい限りだ。

I feel that the album beautifully bridges the ethereal atmosphere of IDM and DubTechno, and it is even elegant as one of those John Beltran’s works. Originally, this debut album has been released from a DubTechno label, Meanwhile, but following albums by Conforce are all being released from Delsin: a Techno oriented album, “Escapism” (2011) and “Kinetic Image” (2013), a dark mood IDM album. Meanwhile, from Echocord (a well-known DubTechno label) an album which sounds like playing DubTechno under the sea is being released under the alias of Silent Harbour, and an Electro oriented album, “Vantage Point” is being released by another alias, Versalife. From these works, I found that works of Boris Bunnik of Conforce is consistently wandering around somewhere in between DubTechno, IDM, and Electro, yet all of them seemed to lack in elegance when compared with “Machine Conspiracy”. However, in this latest album, I feel that the fountainhead of the beauty of Conforce’s music returns with the deepness such found in Silent Harbour’s album being added over it. And the reissue version of “Machine Conspiracy” was released from Delsin just last year, so I am led to think and happy to say that this new album is like a sequel of it.
