Delta Funktionen / Wasteland

暗黒星雲の深層へ
2010年を目前にしていた頃、Delta FunktionenやRedshapeのような、IDMやデトロイト・テクノのエレガンスを細かく砕き、空虚な宇宙空間に静かに放流させたようなミニマルなダッチ・テクノがとても好きだった。最近では、ConforceやJohn Beltranのリリースでも知られるオランダのテクノ・レーベルDelsinのサブレーベルとして、ディープなテクノ作品をリリースして来たAnn AimeeからDelta FunktionenはファーストEPをリリースしている。DeltaことBoris Tellegenによるテクノ・アートのジャケットがこのレーベルのテイストをうまく表現していて、Delta Funktionenの音は、そのイメージにもよくマッチしていた。ただ、2012年にDelsinからリリースされた彼のミックスアルバムとファーストアルバムはどこかモダンなテクノの印象が強く、本来のDelta Funktionenが持つ不穏な無機質感が薄らいだようにも感じていた。そして、2014年には自身のレーベルRadio Matrixを設立。そこからEPの連作をリリースし、本アルバムはそれらを集めた1枚となっている。
アルバムのタイトルともなっている「Wasteland」とは、アンドロメダ銀河の奥深くに存在する謎の惑星だと説明されていて、その同名タイトルの曲にもDrexciyaやJeff MillsのようなオールドスクールなSF仕立ての雰囲気が漂っている。それは、サム・ロックウェル主演の映画「月に囚われた男」を連想させるzrizolinaによるミュージック・ビデオを見ても感じとれる。アルバム3曲目の「Tab」は、Delta Funktionen流のむくんだベースと攻撃的なビートに乗せて、全体としては90年代前半のUnderground Resistanceのリリースなどで知られるSubmergeレーベルのデトロイト・テクノを聴いているかのような懐かしさだ。「Black Endlessness」では流星が飛び交うなか、憂鬱なクラフトワーク的なメロディがデトロイト・テクノの暗闇の中で反復され、「Pusher」は、暗黒星雲の中でアーケードゲームを黙々とプレイしているようなエレクトロ・サウンドだ。更にUnderground Resistanceを思わせる曲でありながら、謎の異星体オーラが漂っている「Bunker」や、ミュージック・ビデオからして古代文明と宇宙の謎めいた繋がりを示唆するようなエキゾチックな雰囲気を持たせている「Mutant Society」が続く。自分の一番のお気に入りは「Lost in the Dream」で、宇宙のオーロラが揺らめくIDMの中でLFOが蘇るようなブリープ感がたまらない。このアルバムを聴いてみて、やっと自分が聴きたかったDelta Funktionenが戻って来たように感じた。
To the Depth ov a Dark Nebula
Just before entering the 2010’s, I was very much in to the minimalistic feel of Dutch Techno, such characterized by Delta Funktionen and Redshape, the music which sounds like elegant clusters of IDM and Detroit Techno being dispersed silently to the void of the space. Delta Funktionen’s debut EP has been released from Ann Aimee, a sublabel of a Dutch Techno label, Delsin known for releasing records for Conforce and John Beltran recently. Delta a.k.a. Boris Tellegen expresses well the taste of this label by working on most of its records’ artworks, and Delta Funktionen’s music seemed to match well with that. Yet, his compilation album and the debut album that were released in 2012 from Delsin sounded somewhere closer to a modern style Techno, and seemed to lack in being ominous and inorganic as how Delta Funktionen should sound like. Then in 2014, he established his own label, Radio Matrix, and released series of EP’s that are then compiled for this new album.
The album is titled as “Wasteland” which is explained to be a mysterious planet that exists deep in the Andromeda Galaxy. The opener track with this same title, has this old school Sci-Fi atmosphere that reminds me of Drexciya and Jeff Mills. This taste is well expressed in its video created by zrizolina; this even makes me feel like watching some parts taken from Sam Rockwell’s film, “MOON”. In “Tab”, bloated bass lines and offensive beats of Delta Funktionen’s style carry on their shoulders, lines of Detroit Techno that remind me of some tracks from Submerge label, known for many releases of Underground Resistance in the early 90’s. While satellites fly about, depressive Kraftwerk-like melodies repeat whining in the dark depth of Detroit Techno in the following track, “Black Endelessness”. “Pusher” is more of an Electro track which makes you hear arcade games being played in a dark nebula. “Bunker”, again is like one of those Underground Resistance’s tracks, but some aura of unknown extraterrestrial beings dwell in it. Even more exotic is the following track, “Mutant Society”, which music video suggests mysterious links between the universe and ancient human civilizations. My favorite track is “Lost in the Dream”, in which IDM waver like space aurora and bleeping LFO revive from within. I now finally could say that this is what I really wanted to hear from Delta Funktionen.
