【ART】 Boris Tellegen a.k.a. DELTA

ガンダムの影響も受けていると言われている、Boris TellegenはDELTAとしても知られているグラフィック・アーティスト。００年代には、ストリートのグラフィティ・アートで有名になり、あのストリート・ファッションのStussy（動画１、動画２）からは、彼のグラフィックをフィーチャーしたアイテムがいくつか発売された。自分はこのときのDELTAによるTシャツを何枚か持っている。いかにもロボットのような３Dなコンストラクションのようなグラフィックが、妙にテクノ的で気に入ったもので…。ちょうど、AutechreのUntiltedのジャケットのような感じで、あれをもっと日本的にしたような印象だった。

その後は、Delsinのアーティストのレコードジャケットなどのグラフィックで彼の作品を見るようになり、自分の中では、無機質なDelsinテクノの音楽とのマッチングが最高に思えたものだ。なかでも、Delta Funktionenの作品のほとんどは彼によるもので、Delsinの中でも、ミニマルビートが重厚なDelta Funktionenにはゴツゴツした鉄鋼のコンストラクションのようなグラフィックがよく似合うと思っていた。

そして、最近発刊された彼の作品集などを見て思うのは、彼の作風も徐々にミニマル感やダーク感、アブストラクト感が増した感じになっているようで、今後の活躍が個人的には、楽しみなアーティストでもある。





Robots of Abstractness

It is said that Dutch graphic artist Boris Tellegen a.k.a. DELTA has been influenced by Japanese robot animation, Gundam. In 2000’s he has become popular for graffiti art in streets, and has provided numbers of graphics for Stussy’s items (Vimeo1, Vimeo2). I, myself did purchase some of the T-shirts featuring his graphics. What made me attracted was the three dimensional robot like constructions drawn by him; that seemed to me as if reflecting something of a sort like a “Techno spirit”. It was right at the time when Autechre has released “Untilted”, and I thought that DELTA’s graphics are like reinterpreting Autechre’s album’s art work into Japanimation(=Japanese animation) style.

After then, as Boris Tellegen, he has started providing his works for Delsin’s record covers. I thought his works fit very well to the musical features of Delsin artists, mostly are Techno artists making robotics sounds. Especially in the case of Delta Funktionen, most of his records’ cover arts are by Boris Tellegen. Delta Funktionen is known as an artist who creates stiff and rugged sound in his Minimal Techno tracks, and I thought that such taste matches well with Tellegen’s graphics of chunky constructions.

By looking at his latest collections, I think Tellegen’s works are now shifting more on minimal, dark, and abstract field, and I am personally looking forward to seeing more from him.
