23エニグマ

インダストリアル・ミュージックというものは、その音楽とコンセプトが、1977年に発売になったThrobbing Gristleのアルバムから発生したと言われている。その頃は、クラフトワークの「ヨーロッパ特急」もリリースされ、それまで大衆音楽の王様として君臨していたロックというものがテクノロジーの力によって変えられようとしていた。そんな流れと合流しながら、W. S. バロウズという存在からインスパイアされる形で、音楽の破壊と創生の道を選んだのが、インダストリアル・ミュージックといえよう。以後、インダストリアル・ミュージックはエクスペリメンタル系、ノイズ系、反体制系、ビート/ロック系など、様々な形に分化して行く。そのうち、90年代のビート/ロック系のインダストリアル・ミュージック（ヨーロッパ代表は、Front242などのEBM系、北米代表はSkinny Puppyなどのロック・メタル系）は、もはやポスト・インダストリアルとも呼ばれ、自分の記憶では、一番メインストリームに近いところまで上りつめたが、それ以降のものはパワーを失った感があった。だが、1981年に解散していたThrobbing Gristleが突然、2004年に復活をし、その同じ年にPerc Traxがスタートした。本作は、現代のインダストリアル・リヴァイヴァルの流れをけん引して来たとも言える、同レーベルの10周年記念アルバムだ。

個人的に、インダストリアル・ミュージックは好きではあるが、実際、ポスト・インダストリアル以降は、インダストリアルな音自体も古臭く感じるようになり、ずっと聴いていなかった。ただ、2010年辺りからインダストリアル・リヴァイヴァルが騒がれるようになってから、若い人の手に渡ったインダストリアルを聴いてみたら、まるで冷蔵庫の奥に20年前に買っておいたチーズがブルーチーズに変化した状態で残っているのが見つかったときのような嬉しさがこみ上げて来た。インダストリアル・ミュージックの特徴でもある、工場の激しい機械音、苦痛に満ちた唸り声、地面を砕くハンマー・ビートに、アシッド、レイヴ、ハードコアテクノ、テクノ、グリッチ、トライバル、ミニマル、マイクロ・ハウス、ベース・ミュージックなどの90年代以降のあらゆる音楽要素が散りばめられている。本アルバムでも、まさに、そのような音楽の数々が楽しめる。ディスク１はPerc Traxからの11曲のセレクションで、ディスク２はPerc Trax創立者のPercによるノンストップ・ミックスだ。ここでは、インダストリアルのテクノへのリンクが色濃く感じられ、LucyによるGo Hiyamaのリミックスなども含まれる。そして、見逃せないのが、このミックスのトラック数が23曲となっているところだ。Throbbing Gristleが、その解散から復活したのも23年後のことで、W.S.バロウズも言及している、23という数字を特殊な出来事と関連づけられるものとする思想「23エニグマ」が、これらのことに寄与しているように思えてならない。まさに、それは、インダストリアル・ミュージックにとってのマジックナンバーかのようだ。ということで、Throbbing Gristleが復活した年に誕生したPerc Traxの23周年の年に何が起こるのかが楽しみだったりもする。








23 Enigma

Industrial music, its name and concept are believed to have born from Throbbing Gristle’s album which was released in 1977. At that time, Kraftwerk’s “Trans-Europe Express” was also released, and the growing power of technology then starts to affect the form of Rock, the long-time reigned king of popular music. Merging with this change that was taking place, and being inspired by the existence of W. S. Burroughs, the music which chose ways of destruction and invention is Industrial music. Since then, Industrial music branches out to various styles: Experimental, Noise, Anti, Beat/Rock, etc. The Beat/Rock style of the 90’s (like Front242 of EBM groups in Europe and Skinny Puppy of Rock/Metal groups in Northern America) is now recognized as a post-Industrial style, and as far as I remember, it became popular enough that it almost hit the mainstream, but Industrial music as a whole kept on losing its power after then. However, after their breaking up in 1981, Throbbing Gristle resurrect suddenly in 2004, and Perc Trax starts in the same year. This album is the 10 year anniversary album of Perc Trax, the label which leads today’s Industrial revival trend.

I personally do favor Industrial music, but I was fed up with Industrial sounds that came after the post-Industrial years, so did not bother listening to them for quite a long time since then. However, as it started to be revived and be talked much of by 2010, I came to listen to some of them that have fallen down into young producers’ hands. It was such a pleasure as if like finding in the depth of a refrigerator, a 20 years old cheese being turned into a blue cheese. The aspects of Acid, Rave, Hardcore Techno, Techno, Glitch, Tribal, Minimal, Micro House, and Bass Music that came after the 90’s are sprinkled over Industrial tracks with characteristic aspects: machinery sounds of factories, shouts of agonies, and ground breaking beats by hammers. You can indeed enjoy such tracks in this album. Disc 1 consists of 11 tracks being selected from the label’s past releases, and disc 2 features a continuous mix piece by Perc, the founder of the label. In this mix, you will find Lucy’s remix of Go Hiyama’s track, so will sense a firm link between Industrial music and Techno as a whole. One interesting point about this mix is the fact that its track list counts up to 23. Recalling that Throbbing Gristle has come back after 23 years from their break up, I feel that these things relate with the concept of ’23 enigma’, known as a belief saying that number 23 is connected to special incidents (it is said that W. S. Burroughs was also in to this concept). Does number 23 work as a magic number for Industrial music then? So let us see what will happen to Perc Trax on its 23rd anniversary, which would also mark the 23rd year from Throbbing Gristle’s resurrection year.
