エレクトロ・ポップ ノンストップ

本作はThomas FehlmannやGui Boratto、また、良質のアンビエントコラボアルバム「Pop Ambient」シリーズのリリースで知られるKompaktからリリースされたうち、John Tejadaにとっては3作目のアルバムとなる。個人的には、Kompaktからの彼のリリースについてしか知らないのだが、4年前にリリースされた「Parabolas」も、その次にリリースされた「The Predicting Machine」も、変わらないのはIDMとエレクトロに裏打ちされたポップ感だ。そして、今作では彼のエレクトロとIDMへの愛情が隠し切れないとばかりに、更に露骨に表現されているように感じる。

まず、アルバムの1曲目から3曲目はWarpの名作IDMコンピアルバム「Bytes」に入っていてもおかしくないようなエレガントな曲だが、どれも「Bytes」からアブストラクト感を取り除いて、John Beltranのメランコリックさを加えたような美しい仕上がりだ。続く「R.U.R.」は、イントロではわからないが、ビートを刻むようになると、Kraftwerkの「The Mix」のような展開になることがすぐわかるし、続く「Vaalbara」もクラウトロック風なイントロからして、明らかにKraftwerk的である。「Cryptochrome」はイントロのベースの音で、やっぱりNew Orderを連想するが、そのポップさはどちらかというとNew OrderというよりはThe Other Two（New OrderのStephen Morris＜ドラマー＞とGillian Gilbert＜主にキーボード＞により結成されたシンセ・ポップ・デュオ）のように明るい。続く「Rubric」はModel 500の「Info World」の電子が飛び交うなか、オリエンタルなストリングスが旋律を奏でるテックハウス。個人的に一番好きなのは「Endorphins」で、New Orderの「Bizarre Love Triangle」をBizarre Inc.がレイヴ的にリミックスしたものを更にエレクトロでウォッシュしたような、爽やかさが良い。「Meadow」は珍しく重めのミニマルビートで始まる曲だが、アブストラクトな雰囲気のIDMがその上を漂うようでかっこいい。このように、過去2枚のアルバムと併せて聴いても、彼の基本的な部分はやはり今作でも変わっていない。現代において、IDMやKraftwerkの電子的な要素やNew Orderのポップな要素を取り込んでいる音楽は多々あるが、彼ほどまでに丹念にそれらを自分の作品に練り込み続けているプロデューサーはいないかも知れない。そして、アルバムを重ねるごとに、その濃厚さと複雑さは増して行っているようにも思える。個人的には、彼のブレないエレクトロ・ポップな世界は、これからも残って欲しいと思う。








Electro-Pop Never Stops

This is Kompakt’s (known for releasing records of Thomas Fehlmann and Gui Boratto, and beautiful Ambient collaboration album series “Pop Ambient”) third album release by John Tejada. As far as I know, the Pop quality of his music being backed up by aspects of IDM and Electro has always been consistent in his past Kompakt albums, “Parabolas” and “Predicting Machine”. And for this album, I see that his love for IDM and Electro is being expressed more undeniably than ever.

The first three tracks of the album are truly elegant tracks, as could be included in the IDM epic, “Bytes” from Warp. Yet, they are beautifully fabricated, free from touches of abstractness found in many tracks of “Bytes”, and added instead are melancholic factors as such found in John Beltran’s works. Then followed by are tracks that remind me of Kraftwerk: “R.U.R.” which does not sound much as so at the beginning, but as its beats start, it becomes obvious that the track will go like “The Mix”, and “Vaalbara” which starts with a Krautrock intro, good enough to sound like Kraftwerk. Furthermore, the bass part of “Cryptochrome” surely reminds me of New Order, but not quite, for its sunny pop feeling, it sounds more like The Other Two (a Synthpop duo by Stephen Morris (on drums) and Gillian Gilbert (on keyboards usually) of New Order). “Rubric” is a Tech　House track in which oriental strings play their melodies while electrons of Model 500’s “Info World” swirl around in it. My favorite is “Endorphins” which sounds refreshing as if a Bizarre Inc.’s Rave remix of New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle” is being washed by Electro. “Meadow” has heavy minimal beats that are not found much in other tracks, but IDM’s abstract aspects flow well on them. Thus, his basics in this album do seem coherent as they are also in his preceding two albums. Today, it is easy to find producers who refer to electronic aspects of IDM and Kraftewerk, and Pop aspects found in New Order, but I guess not many elaborate on weaving them in to their music as much as John Tejada does. I even think that his music is always gaining more thickness and sophistication on every new releases that he make. I personally hope for his consistent world of Electro-Pop to live long. It is enjoyable indeed.
