ダブテクノに溺れるなかれ

Martin Nonstaticはドイツを拠点に活躍をするオランダ人アーティストで、2011年にカナダのダブテクノ・アンビエント系のレーベルとしてよく知られるSilent Seasonよりリリースを開始している。本作は彼にとっては、最初のフルアルバムという形になるが、2011年の初期の作品を聴いてもわかるのは、彼が単純にアトモスフェリックな冷たい美しさを追求し続けるダブテクノ・アーティストではないということだ。

このアルバムは、霧が漂う湖畔に浮かぶ、古い小屋の中の家具の小さな物音から始まる。どこか現実離れした夢のような世界とは違い、身近な現実から始まるダブテクノが幕開けの曲「Behind the Window – Intro」だ。そして、次第にダブテクノの地平に何人かのうめき声が漂い始め、夢の中で過去に自分が引き戻されるような感覚に襲われる。確かにアルバムのほとんどの曲はダブテクノという呪術にかけられたような、まどろみをまとっているが、いつもどこかに現実の記憶がその呪縛から抜け出そうとしているのを感じる。「Far Away」ではダブテクノが波立つなかを男性のコーラスが浮き沈みをしながら漂い、次第にジャズのリズムがそこを支配していく。「Now And Then」ではファンク＆グルーヴが氷の中に閉じ込められながらも鳴り続けていて、「Gilli Nangu」ではイスラムな歌声の流れるラジオが海に沈む。「Her Dream Diary」では、ダブテクノの深い夢からシューゲーのギターが目覚め出す様子がうかがえる。ただ、彼の表現力はここで留まることはない。冷たい霧が世界を洗い流す「Soul Beauty」では、遠くから分厚いベース音と共に畏れるべき精霊の一団がこちらに徐々に近づいて来て、自分の体の中を通り抜けて行くのを感じる。「Albedo Effect」では、無数の光線の音色が交差し、反射し合う様子が鋭く、そして鮮やかに表現されている。これらは、シンプルにダブテクノと呼べるような曲ではないのは言うまでもなく、もはや彼にとってダブテクノは単なる様式ではなく、現実と夢の世界を行き来するダイナミズムを包み込む、大きな海原のようなものなのかも知れないと…思うにいたるのであった。








Not to be Drowned in DubTecho

Martin Nonstatic is a Germany based Dutch artist, and is known for releasing his earliest work from Silent Season (a DubTechno / Ambient oriented label established in Canada). This is his first album in full, but even listening to his early work released in 2011, it is imaginable that he is not one of those stereotyped DubTechno artists who just tend to sink themselves in to some atmospheric beyond of coldness and beauty.

The album opens with small recorded noises maybe made by pieces of furniture of an old cabin sitting on a foggy lake. It is not like an illusory world of a dream, but are sounds of reality existing close to your life, which start the opening DubTechno track, “Behind the Window – Intro”. Then you will hear a few moaning voices at the horizon of the DubTechno track, and start to feel being pulled back by the past while you are in your dream. Most of the tracks in the album sound like they are being put under a spell of DubTechno, they all drape around such drowsiness, yet at some points I can feel that memories of reality in them are struggling to break the spell. I hear a man’s chorus dwelling up and down on the undulating DubTechno feature of “Far Away”, until a Jazzy rhythm prevails the atmosphere. I can also hear Funk & Groove being locked under an ice floor in “Now And Then”; and radio playing an Islamic song sinks under water in “Gilli Nangu”. In “Her Dream Diary”, I find Shoegaze guitars waking up from a deep dream of DubTechno. Yet, his spectrum of expression does not end with such. A cold foggy track, “Soul Beauty” pounds the thickest bass sounds that gradually approach to your body from afar, which then make you sense awe-inspiring spirits walk through your abdomen. In “Albedo Effect”, you will hear millions of vivid light rays and tunes crossing with each other and reflecting in acute angles to everywhere. These are not such tracks that could simply be called as DubTechno, thus they make me feel that DubTechno for Martin Nonstatic is no more a mere style of music, but is rather like an ‘ocean’ that enfolds all dynamics of come and go that may exist in between one’s dream and reality.
