森の愉しみ方を映す池

東京もすっかり、初夏の陽気となり、この季節感にぴったりのアルバムが聴きたくなったので、これを紹介しようと思う。

Robert Daviesはニューヨークを拠点に活動をするアーティストで、カナダのコンテンポラリー・アンビエント系のレーベルdataObscuraからのリリースを主としている。2010年にリリースされたこのアルバムは19世紀アメリカの作家・思想家・詩人のヘンリー・デイヴィッド・ソローの代表作『ウォールデン　森の生活』に出て来る一節からインスパイアされて制作されたとのこと。その一節はアルバムのジャケの中面にも記載されているが、まさにソローがウォールデン池畔の森の中での生活で目にした、硝子のように藻を映し出す池の様子を音楽として表現したものとなっている。1曲目の「Summer Algae Pool」では、光がゆらめき、池を彩る藻が浅瀬と淵で重なり合いながら、ゆっくりと漂うような立体感を繊細に表現している。続く「Ripple Glisten」ではピアノの音色が池の上を漂う涼しげな空気を表現し、その空気が次第に複雑な共鳴と共に螺旋を描きながら聴く者の意識を包み込む。まるで、魂を抜かれ、池から立ち上る仄かな水蒸気と共に天へと導かれるような感覚になる。そして、3曲目の「Amidst Dark Reeds」では池畔に棲息する生き物の鳴き声が聞こえ、暗い霧と共に夜が近づいて来る感じがする。最後の「Boughs Overhanging」では、静けさのなかにミステリアスな空気がゆっくりと流れ、深い夜の彼方が徐々に光を帯びて来る。いずれの曲も15分程度の長さで、森と池畔が生み出す光の柔らかさ、空気の涼やかさ、木々の神秘さ、そして、霧の静けさをそれぞれで表現している。つまり、このアルバム1枚で池畔での一日が堪能できるということだ。








The Pond that Reflects the Joy in the Woods

It is quite warm in Tokyo these days. I can feel that summer is approaching already. So, I would like to mention on an album that may well fit to this kind of a season.

Robert Davies is a New York based artist whose main releases are being done from a Canadian Contemporary / Ambient label, dataObscura. This album, released in 2010 was created by him being inspired from a part included in “Walden (originally titled as “Walden; or, Life in the Woods”)” by Henry David Thoreau (an American author, philosopher, and poet of 19th century). A quote from the book is also printed inside the album’s cover art, and the music contained here indeed seems to express the mirror-like pond that reflects algae underwater, as may have seen from eyes of Thoreau, as he writes in his book, when staying in the woods with the pond. In the opener track “Summer Algae Pool”, the sunlight sways while algae at shallows and depths of the pond overlap and dwell slowly. Piano’s tune expresses the cool air lodging on the surface of the pond in the following track “Ripple Glisten”. This air, then embraces your consciousness with echoes and spirals of the atmosphere, and you will feel your soul being extracted and being lifted up together with faint mist arising from the pond’s surface. In “Amidst Dark Reeds”, you will hear various songs of life humming around the pond, and feel that night is approaching with a dark fog. Mysterious ether flows in the silence of the closer track “Boughs Overhanging”, in which light gradually starts to leak out from the depth of the night lying beyond. Each of the tracks is as long as 15 minutes, and respectively expresses the delicacy of the sunlight, the clearness of the air, the mysteriousness of the woods, and the silence of the fog, all of that created by the pond. In a sense, listening to this album is like experiencing one whole day sitting by the pond.
