μ-ziqをはじめ個性的なエレクトロニック・ミュージック・アーティストのリリースをしているレーベルPlanet Muが、今年で20周年を迎えた。そのアニバーサリー・イヤーにリリースされた本作は、2013年と2014年にμ-ziqがリリースしたEP、「XTEP」と「Rediffusion」の曲を1枚のアルバムにまとめたものとなっている。レアな音源としては「Forger」が加えられているが、実はこちら、2013年にリリースされたアルバム「Chewed Corners」の日本版のボートラでもあったので、日本のファンとしてはあまり目新しい感じはしないかも知れない。とはいえ、各EPの曲順はアルバム用に変更されていて、通しでこれを聴いてみると、それはそれでμ-ziqらしさがにじみ出ているようにも感じられ、愉しい。まず、最初の曲「XT」は「XTEP」のメイン曲で70年代風のポカポカした陽だまりを思わせるシンセ・サウンドにアシッドな雰囲気が次第に流れ込み、ファンクまでもが合流するというポップ・ナンバーだ。続く「RITM」もレイヴなピアノがメインとなってはいるものの、μ-ziqならではの透明感と複雑なエレクトロニクスが全体を支配している。その他「PULSAR」もスペイシーなディスコナンバーで、「XTEP」からの曲はどれも、どこか懐かしいポップ要素があり、本作のエッセンスのひとつにもなっている。また、「Rediffusion」からの曲は「BLEM」のようなメランコリックなメロディが美しいものや、「PRG」のように「Bytes」の「Focus Mel」（Atypic：Plaidの片割れのAndy Turner）のようなキラキラ感のIDMなど、これまたμ-ziqらしい繊細な曲ばかりとなっている。　

過去記事（μ-ziq on Soundcloud１、２、３、４）にもあるように、Aphex Twinが13年ぶりにアルバム「Syro」を出し、Soundcloudに未発表音源を立て続けに公開したのに呼応するかのように、μ-ziqもまた自分の未発表音源を大量に公開し出した（現在もAphex Twinが未発表曲を公開すると、彼もそれに追随するという状況が続いている）。ただ、それらの音源の並びをよく見てみると、それはまるで彼の音楽活動の歴史を追うような順番になっていて、2013年にリリースされた、同じく彼の懐かしい音源を集めたアルバム「Somerset Avenue Tracks (1992-1995)」にも通ずる感じがある。そして、今回リリースされた「XTLP」にもμ-ziqらしい繊細さのなかに、どこか懐かしいポップ要素が含まれていて、ここでも彼自身が自分のなかにある、あらゆる「懐かしさ」を探すことに、夢中になっている感がうかがえる。ただ、本作に収録の曲にある懐かしさは、現在のμ-ziqらしい複雑なエレクトロニクスのオブラートに包まれた、美しい記憶としての70年代～80年代音楽のようで、個人的には非常に好感が持てる。








Nostalgia

Planet Mu is known as a label that keeps releasing records of impressive Electronic music artists including μ-ziq, and it is its 20th year anniversary this year. This album by μ-ziq, released for this anniversary year consists of tracks from his two EPs that have been released in 2013 and 2014, namely “XTEP” and “Rediffusion”. The track called “Forger” is also included in addition ‘exclusively’, but this track has already been out in Japan as a bonus track for the album, “Chewed Corners” (2013). However, the order of tracks in the album is being altered from that of the EPs, and I find that this album is quite amusing still, for it reveals much about the likeliness of μ-ziq’s music. The opener track, “XT” is the main track taken from “XTEP”. It is a Pop track which possess a warm and sunny feeling of the 70’s Synth Pop, and Acid and Funk features come along later in the track. The following track, “RITM” plays a Rave piano, but is not so much of a Rave as it should be, for μ-ziq’s characteristic electronic sounds of sophistication and translucence prevail the track as a whole. Including “PULSAR”, a galactic Disco track, many of the tracks from “XTEP” do have aspects of Pop music of sweet old days, and such add a good essence to the album. Moreover, all tracks from “Rediffusion” are delicate as they should be in most of μ-ziq’s tracks. “BLEM” plays beautiful melancholic melodies, and “PRG” is filled with twinkling sounds that remind me of an IDM track (from “Bytes” of The Blackdog Productions), “Focus Mel” by Atypic (by Andy Turner of Plaid).

Everyone is aware by now thatμ-ziq kept on uploading his unreleased tracks on Soundcloud (see μ-ziq on Soundcloud 1, 2, 3, 4) as to follow Aphex Twin’s act of doing the same at the time when he has released “Syro”, his first album in 13 years (and μ-ziq still does this even now, for Aphex Twin still continues uploading his unreleased tracks). Interestingly enough, μ-ziq’s uploaded tracks are his old tracks all lined in a historical order, and this style seems to link well with the concept of the album, “Somerset Avenue Tracks (1992-1995)” (2013) which also consists of his old tracks. And now in “XTLP”, I find that Pop aspects of sweet old days are confined well in μ-ziq’s delicate sound structure. Thus, I now tend to think that μ-ziq is in to searching for various ‘sweet memories’ that may fit in his works. For this album’s tracks, such may be the beautiful memories of the70’s and the 80’s music, which I do favor also, except they are all wrapped up in μ-ziq’s electronic sophistication of today.
