美しくも、畏ろしい

ドイツのミニマル・テクノレーベルとして名高いKompaktから毎年恒例でリリースされている、Wolfgang Voigtのキュレーションによる、エクスペリメンタルで美しいアンビエントコンピ「Pop Ambient」には欠かせない、Marsen Julesの新作。この手の作品では、楽曲の美しさや叙情的な世界に精神をゆだねるだけでなく、内包するストーリーを想像しながら聴くのが個人的には好きで…。仮にこのアルバムの各曲にストーリーを当てはめるとしたら、こんな感じになるのではないかと思ってみた…。

I. 暗雲立ち込める運命への憂いと好奇心で、心が張り詰めながら揺れ動く
II. そこは、地底に広がる巨大工場で、彼方に響く鉄鋼音に戦く
III. 一歩ずつ踏み出すリズムを聞きながら、先の見えない荘厳な旅の始まる
IV. 天からのメッセージが朝もやの中の光のように降り注ぎ始める
V. 勇気をふるって前へ進んでも、暗い霧が目を覆い、暗黒の世界へ追い込まれて行く
VI. 古い幽霊船が死の氷河に船体を擦りながら航行する
VII. 朝の太陽の暈が震えながら、穏やかな氷の海を包み込む
VIII. 暗い雲間から差す光が、海の水蒸気の薄い霧を粉雪のように輝かせている
IX. 燦々と降り注ぐ光の反射と反復
X. 海の底からのソナー音の反響を感じながら、悠然と海を漂い
XI. 大きな波風の束を傷ついた船首でザクザクと切り分けながら進むビート
XII. そして遂に、静寂の海へ抜け出て行く

アルバムのサウンドスケープを言葉にしてしまうと、簡素なものになってしまうが、個人的には、このアルバムのタイトル名がその世界観を物語っていると思う。その名のとおり、畏れを感じながらも美しさに触れるような空間世界を描いたアルバムだ。ジャケ・アートもNYのモード系の写真家Erik Madigan Heck によるエレガントな仕上がりで、光と闇の対比を表す、コンセプチュアルな作品として完成されている。





Beauty and Awe

Marsen Jules is an artist who deserves well to take a part constantly in Kompakt’s experimental ambient album series, “Pop Ambient” curated by Wlofgang Voigt. I often tend to listen to albums of such artists, by imagining stories that they may embrace, instead of just throwing my mind into their beautiful and poetic worlds. In this album, my story would flow like this.

I. The heart is strained, and is wobbling for sorrows and curiosities lying over the doom
II. Shuddering to the sound of irons roaring afar in a titanic factory of deep under ground
III. Step by step forward, listening to the rhythm of this sublime trip of unknown
IV. A message from above pours like light shower of misty morning
V. The next step forward of bravery is soon blinded by fog of darkness rushing into blackness
VI. An aged phantom ship dawdles grazing her body through glaciers of death
VII. Shivering halo of morning sun spreads over the serene ice field
VIII. Sea vapor fog dancing like powder snow in the light from chasms of grey clouds
IX. Repetitious reflections of radiant rays
X. A calm drift ride over the sea, listening to sonar sounds pulsing from below
XI. Hearing beats of the damaged bow chipping wads of winds and waves coming by
XII. And the ocean of stillness finally opens through

However still, I feel that the literal expressions of such are a bit plain, and think that the title of the album itself expresses much better the atmosphere created within it. As it could be imagined from the title, this album is like rendering a nature of beauty and awe. The cover art of this album features a work done by Erik Madigan Heck, a fashionable photographer from NY, and that makes me understand that the album has been wrapped up into such, bearing a conceptually elegant wholeness, as to portray darkness and lightness comparison which could exist in this world.
