The Orb / Moonbuilding 2701 AD
個人的にThe Orbといえば、1991～92年にリリースされた「Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld」と「U.F.Orb」が最強のアルバムで、以後の作品はあまり印象に深くは残っていない。特にここ最近はコラボ作などが多く、れっきとした彼らのオリジナル作としては久々のリリースと言えよう。
アルバムの冒頭から、その期待を裏切ることなく、「Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld」の世界に引き戻されるような、霧が川のように流れるアトモスフィアが広がり、走馬灯のように代わる代わる不思議なサンプル音のフェーズが現れては消え、早送りされる夢を見ているような感覚になる。ダブの坩堝にトライバルなビートが乱入し、旧式の宇宙工場の雑音も聞こえて来る。2曲目の「Moon Scapes」は地底に響くテクノ的ビートにトランス的な光の瞬きと、眩暈を誘発するダブテクノが交錯し、後半ではEDMの高揚感までをも道連れにする濃密な曲。続く「Lunar Caves」では、ダブテクノのアンビエンスの中、オリエンタルなベルの音がきらめき、The Future Sound of Londonの近未来の雑踏音が渦巻きのように回転する。そして、最後の「Moonbuilding 2701 AD」は、レゲエの香りのするスペイシー・ダブにファンク・グルーヴを交配したような曲で、数年前にリリースされた、Lee ‘Scratch’ Perryをフィーチャーした「The Observer in the Star House」以来、The Orbがいよいよ、宇宙へ飛び出したような感じの曲となっている。
どの曲も14分～10分の長い曲になるが、どの曲も異次元レベルでイマジネーションが広がるので、全くその長さを感じさせない。むしろ、1曲だけで1時間くらいの長さにして4枚組のアルバムにしてもらいたいくらいだ。このアルバムから派生する次の展開にも期待したい。なお、日本版はボーナストラックとして2曲（「Moon Quake 1」「Moon Quake 3」）が追加となる。
The Orb / Moonbuilding 2701 AD
The strongest impression that I have about The Orb is their old albums, “Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld” and “U.F.Orb” of 1991~92’s, so none of the others are well remembered. Also, many of their recent albums are collaboration albums, and this will be their first original album for quite some time.
Yet the album would not let you down, for it opens with this foggy atmosphere that flows like a river, as if setting you back to the well-remembered world of “Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld”. Unexpected variations of sound samples come and go kaleidoscopically, while Tribal beats disturb the overall Dub atmosphere filled with noises of outdated space factories. The next track, “Moon Scapes” sounds psychedelic enough that it pounds subterranean Techno beats, while light-sparkling Trance and dizzy DubTechno mingle with each other, until up-lifting waves of EDM wash their way off. The following track, “Lunar Caves” sounds quiet as DubTechno in the beginning, but soon oriental bells ring and a TFSOL (The Future Sound of London)-like hustle-bustle starts to roll like a tornado. In the closer, “Moonbuilding 2701 AD”, Reggae flavored ‘Space-Dub’ is being crossbred with Funk grooves, and it is like indicating that The Orb is finally going out to the cosmos, ever since their release of “The Observer in the Star House”, an album featuring Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry.
All of the tracks in the album are as long as 10~14 minutes, but none of them sound long and boring, for they enable our imaginations to spread to some unknown dimensions. I would rather prefer to have each of the tracks to be as long as an hour, and have the album to be in 4CDs. Let us wait for something more to come later. By the way, Japan version includes 2 additional tracks: “Moon Quake 1” and “Moon Quake 3”.
