インダストリアルへの贖罪

Shedでも知られるRené PawlowitzのHead HighとWK7名義のEPをコンパイルしたミックスアルバム。Shedは2008年と2010年にOstgut Tonからアトモスフェリックなテクノ・アルバムをリリースしてはいたが、2012年の「The Killer」では、ブレイクビートの要素も見え隠れし、比較的Head HighとWK7名義の音に近い方向に舵を切った印象があった。そして、ここに来てインダストリアルの巨大ハンマーで、それらの曲を殴打しながら、彼なりのハウスやハードコアへのリスペクトを表現したようなミックスアルバムが発売された。

岩石の巨人が行進するような重いビートはミックスの最初から終わりまで弱まることはないが、不思議なほど巧妙に絡んで来る多彩な音楽要素が土煙の中で回るミラーボールの輝きのように見える。「It’s a Love Thing [Power Cut]」のThe Black Dogの「Virtual」のような螺旋状の旋律がインダストリアルなビートに痛めつけられながら、ゆらゆら踊る感じはスリリングだ。「Higher Power [Original Mix]」では、ダブテクノのバウンス感のなかで、地平線に浮かぶ霧の束が擦れ合うようにエコーし、更に「Higher Power [Hardcore PCK Mix]」ではデトロイトテクノの繊細なシンセワークとブレイクビートがぶつかり合う。レイヴのメロディを冷凍庫で凍らせたような音がハードコア・ビートに乗るというミスマッチ感がなんとも言えない「Rave [Dirt Mix]」。続く「Do It Yourself」は錆びついた工場でハウスをアイスクリーム・マシンに入れて高速回転させたような曲で、そこから次第にクレイジーさは増して行き、懐かしのSmart E’sの「Sesame’s Treet」のようなブレイクビート・ハードコアの「Megatrap [Real Mix]」や「Power Seat」にまで至る。そして、ミックスのフェーズはUKガラージにダブテクノのエーテルがまとわりつく「More Music」や、キラキラ・シンセと女性のヴォイスサンプルがハウス感を出している「Megatrap [Mix Mix]」に移行する。最後はデトロイトテクノやIDMの繊細さにトライバルな荒々しさとインダストリアルの腐敗感が絶妙にブレンドされた「Hardcore [Edit]」で締めくくる。ハードコアの狂気が背中に迫り来るなか、ハウスのエロティシズムや、ダブテクノの冷静、IDMの知性までもがインダストリアルの暴力に抑圧された感じが表現されていて、現代社会の地獄絵図でも見ているかのようなミックスとなっている。

Sacrifices for Industrial Music

This album is a mixed album which compiles EPs of Head High and WK7, that are both aliases of Shed a.k.a. René Pawlowit. Shed has released two of atmospheric taste Techno albums from Ostgut Ton in 2008 and 2010, but aspects of Breakbeat have started to show up in “The Killer” (2012), which in effect made it sound more like the music of Head High and WK7. And now, you will find his respect towards House and Hardcore music as you listen to this mixed album which actually features such types of music being beaten up by a bulky hammer of Industrial music.

The pressure of heavy beats pounding like footsteps of marching rock giants would never lose its strength throughout the mix. Yet, as like seeing glitters of a rotating mirror ball hang in a midst of a cloud of dirt dust, diverse musical factors strangely entwine well with those beats. It makes me thrilled to hear helical melodies that remind me of The Black Dog’s “Virtual” shimmer as Industrial beats bang them in “It’s a Love Thing [Power Cut]”. In “Higher Power [Original Mix]” you will hear rustling echo made by heaps of fog that dwell at the horizon of DubTechno atmosphere. Moreover, delicate synth sounds of Detroit Techno collide with Breakbeat in “Higher Power [Hardcore PCK Mix]”. Rave tunes that sound static as if being frozen in a freezer are made to run on Hardcore beats in “Rave [Dirt Mix]”. “Do It Yourself” which follows is like House music being rotated rapidly in an ice cream machine sitting in a rotten factory, and this track then leads to the phase of craze featuring Breakbeat Hardcore oriented tracks: “Megatrap [Real Mix]” and “Power Seat” that would make you recall Smart E’s ”Sesame’s Treet”. Then the mix moves to another phase, wherein UK Garage is being entangled by ether of DubTechno as in “More Music” and House aspects of synth and female voice samples glitter as in “Megatrap [Mix Mix]”. The closer track is “Hardcore [Edit]”, a gorgeous track in which sensitiveness of Detroit Techno and IDM, wildness of Tribal House, and corruption of Industrial music are all blended together in one. As a whole, this mix sounds like as if having Hardcore music’s insanity creep at your backs, while House music’s eroticism, DubTechno’s calamity, and IDM’s intelligence are all being suppressed at the same time by the brutality of Industrial music. Say that the mix is well reflecting the hell of this modern society.
