宇宙のダークサイドへ

B12といえば、90年代初頭にテクノ界の1ジャンルを確立したとも言えるWarp Records の「Artificial Intelligence」シリーズにおいて、The Black DogやAutechreとも肩を並べ参加し、インテリジェント・テクノの代表格としても知られるようになった二人組である。90年代前半のリリース以後、目立った活動もなく、2007年に一度は復活したものの、2009年に全12枚にも及ぶCDセットで彼らのレーベル、B12 Recordsのベスト盤をリリースして以来、活動を休止していた。そして、このほど、B12としては、8年ぶりのEPをSoma Quality Recordingsよりリリース。

まず、ジャケアートからして、いかにもB12らしい宇宙的なイメージで、期待に胸が膨らんだ。1曲目の「Into the Void」は、静かな宇宙の彼方からゆっくりと見知らぬ惑星の周回軌道がこちらに最接近するような曲で、彼ららしいインテリジェント・テクノの雰囲気を持っている。続く、「Descension」ではIDMの神髄を思わせるストイックなパーカッションに、邪悪な闇のエーテルが忍び寄り、「Unsound Mind」でも、彼らならではの優美なシンセに繊維のように絡むアシッド要素が真空の宇宙空間へと聴く者を誘うが、重いベースとビートがその音楽に一種の淀みを与えているようにも感じとれる。更に、最後の「Terra Incognita」は、惑星のダークサイドの重苦しさの中に蠢く小さな生命の光を感じさせる曲となっていて、やはり我々がよく知るB12のもつ、美しきSF感とは少し違った印象の曲となっている。本来、B12の音楽は50年代から80年代に多くのSF小説の表紙を描いた（アンドレイ・タルコフスキーが映画化した「惑星ソラリス」の原作の初めての英語翻訳本の初版の表紙イラストを手掛けた）Paul Lehrの作品のようなディストピアの陰りを備えながらも、「2001年宇宙の旅」のような静的な美しさを、その基本にしていたと思う。ただ、本作では、それらクラシカルなSFの持つピュアでクリーンな幻想世界に対して、現実味を帯びた宇宙の邪悪な側面がその影を落とすようになったようにも感じる。もはや、彼らのなかでも、宇宙は単にロマンチックな近未来の象徴ではなく、不穏な陰を拭い去ることのできない現未来として見えているのかも知れない。





Into the Dark Side of the Void

The duo, B12 are best known as ones of the groups that represent Intelligent Techno, which may be thought as a category of Techno music which has evolved out from the compilation album, “Artificial Intelligence” (released from Warp Records in the early 90’s ) in which they have been featured alongside with The Black Dog and Autechre. After their several releases during the early 90’s, they have disappeared once from the scene until 2007, and in 2009, 12 CD box set consisting of their past works of their label B12 Records was being released. And they are now back as B12 with their EP (Soma Quality Recordings) after an interval of eight years.

At the first look, the cover art of the EP is very much like of a B12-taste, for its astronomical imagery. The opening track, “Into the Void” sounds typically like their Intelligent Techno, and makes you feel an orbit of an unknown planet approaching to your closest side from the farthest of the void. Stoic percussive beats, the quintessence of IDM please you well in the following track, “Descention”, but there approaches an evil ether of a darkness. Just like being thrown into the void, you may hear their synth of grace looping with fibers of Acid in “Unsound Mind”, but soon the mass of bass and beats starts to foul this music. In the closer, “Terra Incognita”, you will find squirming twinkles of tiny lives in the grossness of the dark side of a moon, which again does not sound so much like B12’s music of Sci-Fi beauty. What I have expected from their music was basically the air of static beauty like which may be found in the film, “2001: A Space Odyssey”, bearing a gloom of dystopia which reminds me of Paul Lehr’s (a Sci-Fi artist known for cover arts of many Sci-Fi novels published during the 50’s through the 80’s, also known for providing the cover art for the first English translated novel of “Solaris”, widely known for the film by Andrei Tarkovsky –or by Steven Soderbergh, maybe…) world. While in this EP, I find wicked shadows of the space in reality casting over classical Sci-Fi visionaries, pure and clean. So now, the space, may no longer mean to them as romantic as the approaching future, but more like the just-arrived future which cannot dispel its disquieting shadow any longer.
