90年代初頭から多くのテクノ～アンビエント作品をリリースしてきたBiosphere。本作はフィジカルでのアンビエント作品としては、2011年の東日本大震災の際の福島原発の爆発からインスパイアされた「N-Plants」以来となる。滞在していたポーランド、クラクフのヴォルスキという森に13世紀の中世時代に存在したブロニスラヴァという女王がタタール人の襲撃から逃れるため、潜んでいたという話を知った彼は、その女王が森の中で聞いた音に思いをはせ、このアルバムを作ったということらしい。アルバムのジャケット写真には民族衣装をまとうアルメニア人の女性をフィーチャーし、収録曲においてはロシアや東ヨーロッパの民族音楽を巧みに織り込んでいる。
アルバムは、森の精霊たちが朝靄のカーテンを少しずつ開けて、日差しがゆっくり差し込むような「Out Of The Cradle」から始まる。続く「Wyll And Purpose」は運命の重さを予言するような光の言葉を感じる曲で、確かに神的な響きのあるタイトルなのだが、キリスト教系ラジオ局のWYLLとひっかけた感じが確信犯的だ。「Free From The Bondage You Are In」「With Their Paddles In A Puddle」では、東ヨーロッパの民族音楽の歌唱が目の回る空間のなかで乱反響しているようなアンビエント曲。個人的に一番、心を打たれた曲は「Than Is The Mater」で、圧倒的な深さのベース音があらゆる悲しみを飲み込んだ息遣いのごとく、全身を肉体的な温かさで震わせる。その他多くの曲で東ヨーロッパ民族音楽の歌声がBvdubのエンジェリック・ヴォイスのように聞こえるが、「Aura In The Kitchen With The Candlesticks」だけでは、それがアコースティックに包まれ、蝋燭の灯のもとで奏でられるエレジーに変容する。アルバムタイトルの「Departed Glories」は聖書のサムエル 4:21にある「栄光はイスラエルを去った。神の箱が奪われたからです…」から来ていると思われ、心の苦痛を押し殺すようなダークアンビエントとなっている。ポーランドの森というと、アンジェイ・ワイダの「カティンの森」を連想するが、それだけでなく時代を超えて、そこに棲むあらゆる精霊と共に多くの悲しみを抱く森だということを教えてくれるアルバムだ。
In the Woods of Poland
Back since the early 90’s, Biosphere is known for releases of Techno~Ambient works. This would be his latest physical format album since “N-Plants” (2011) which has been created by being inspired from the explosion of Fukushima’s nuclear plant caused by Japan’s great earthquake disaster of 2011. During his stay in Krakow, Poland he has been told a story that a Polish medieval queen, Bronislawa (13th century) escaping from Tartar invaders, has hidden in Wolski woods which is located near his place. It is said that this album has been created by turning his thoughts on the sounds that the queen may have listened to in the woods then. The cover art of the album features a photograph of a woman in Almenian native costume, and Russian and East European folk songs are blended ingeniously in the tracks of the album.
The album opens with “Out Of The Cradle” in which a sunlight gradually streams in as spirits of the woods slowly open the curtain of a morning mist. The following track’s title, “Wyll And Purpose” may sound sacred by itself - and makes it sound more so, for WYLL even stands for Catholic radio station – and is like a piece that makes us realize the words of the light that foretell how heavy our destinies may weigh. “Free From The Bondage You Are In” and “With Their Paddles In A Puddle” are Ambient tracks in which East European folk songs diffuse in echoes within whirling atmospheres. The bass of such a consuming depth in “Than Is The Mater” swallows every sorrow, breath by breath and makes whole of your body tremble in somatic heat. East European folk songs featured in many other tracks may ring angelic voices that may well be found in Bvdub’s works, but they are draped by acoustics in “Aura In The Kitchen With The Candlesticks”, so emerges to be an elegy played under a candle light. “Departed Glories”, the track that stands for the album’s title is a Dark Ambient that represses agonies of souls, and may be referring to the Bible’s verse, Samuel 4:21 saying “The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken …”. I would always remember of Andrzej Wajda’s film, “Katyń” when Polish woods come across to my mind, but this album may let you understand that they transcend generations and embrace a manifold of grief together with various spirits that dwell there.
