伝説のGasのボックス再登場
Kompaktの創立メンバーでもある、Wolfgang Voigtが1990年代後半にグリッチ系の作品を多く出して来たMille PlateauxからGas名義でいくつかのアルバムをリリースしている。それらGasのかつてのリリース・アルバム4枚がリマスターされ、2008年にはKompaktより「Nah Und Fern」というタイトルのCDボックスでリリースされた。それから8年が経ち、今回はヴァイナル形式の3枚のアルバムとレア音源をまとめたボックスがリリースとなった。「Nah Und Fern」には、「Gas」「Zauberberg」「Königsforst」「Pop」の4枚が封入されていたが、今回は「Zauberberg」「Königsforst」「Pop」の構成となっている。ただし、「Nah Und Fern」では当初リリースされた「Königsforst」のヴァイナル盤から2曲がドロップアウトされており、今回のボックスでは、この不足分の2曲も含まれている格好だ。そして、これらのアルバムの他に同梱されているのが、いわゆるレア音源であるが、1曲目の「Tal 90」は、かつてKompaktの名物アンビエントコンピである「Pop Ambient 2002」に収録されていたエクスクルーヴ・トラックである。ストリングスが緩やかに漂う、暖かみのあるアンビエントだ。そして、もう1曲は1999年にリリースされた12インチ「Oktember」のロングバージョンで、こちらは緊迫感と重量感のあるダブテクノながら、後半はクラシカルなカオスに至るという美しい1曲だ。このボックスセットは、各方面で品質の面で色々と言われているようだが、確かにレコード盤面に指紋というか人の指の跡があったりするのが、少々気になった。封入のブックレットには森や木の写真を水彩画風に画像加工しているグラフィックが延々印刷されているだけなので、それほど感動するものでもない。全般的に素晴らしいボックスとはいえないが、「Königsforst」がフルでリマスターされたものが聴けるだけで、個人的にはOKだ。

Legendary Gas in a Box Again
Kompakt’s co-founder, Wolfgang Voigt under the alias Gas has had few album releases from Mille Plateaux, known for many Glitch record releases in late 1990’s. Four of those Gas’ albums were being remastered, and were packed in a box titled “Nah Und Fern”, for a release by Kompakt in 2008. Eight years from then, three of the albums are now being pressed in vinyls, put together with another rare tracks in a box for another special issue. “Nah Und Fern” was a collection of the four albums: “Gas”, “Zauberberg”, “Königsforst”, and “Pop”, and this new box now consists of “Zauberberg”, “Königsforst”, and “Pop”. While “Nah Und Fern” had dropped out two tracks from the original vinyl version of “Königsforst”, this box includes the very two of the missed out ones. Adding on to these albums, rarities are also being included. One of them is a track called “Tal 90”, which is a track that has been included exclusively in Kompakt’s well-known Ambient compilation, “Pop Ambient 2002”. It is a warm Ambient track in which strings sound gently in the whole flow. Another one is a long version of “Oktember” (EP released in 1999), which is a DubTechno track bearing a good degree of tension and heaviness, but it stretches to some extent of a beauty by going through a chaos of Classical music. I am aware that many things are being said about the quality of this box set itself, and it is true that few fingerprints found on the vinyls did bother me also. Even the booklet inside is not so much appealing, for all you find are pages of printed graphics of watercolor-filtered photos of trees and forests. The product as a whole may not be splendid as may have been expected, but I am fairly happy as far as the full version of “Königsforst”, being remastered is finally available now.
