愛すべきマシーン
もはや、世界の音楽界を席巻したことで、あまりにも有名な日本生まれのリズムマシーン「Roland TR-808」。この名機を愛した、アーティストが総出演するドキュメンタリー映画が公開され、そのサンドトラックという形で本アルバムもリリースされた。映画はApple Music等で配信されているが、映画を見ずとも、このサントラだけでも十分に楽しめる内容だ。
1980年代初頭、まずはAfrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Forceの「Planet Rock」がまさに彗星のごとく音楽惑星に墜落し、本来デジタルとは縁遠いと思われていたヒップホップやR&Bの血潮にエレクトロニクスが浸透して行くようになった。そして、まさにそれを実現したのが、TR-808だったと言える。ただ、その広がりは留まる範囲を知らず、ヨーロッパに目を向ければテクノの代表であるRichie Hawtinやイギリスのポップの王様、New OrderもTR-808なくしては語ることのできない存在であることは言うまでもない。本映画にも登場するJam & Lewisは、あのジャネット・ジャクソンのプロデュースを長年に渡り行っていることで有名だが、「ジャネット・ジャクソンといえば、あのノリね」という代名詞的なリズムパターンも、本アルバムに収録のShannonの「Let The Music Play」（1983年）において見てとれる。そして、アルバムの後半では、文字通り808 Stateのレイヴから今日のダブステップなどへの変遷がフィーチャーされていて、マイナーストリームのみならず、メジャーストリームにまで浸透し、現代まで流れ続けるTR-808の血液をリズムの鼓動と共に感じることができる。

Our Lovely Machine
A Japan born rhythm machine, Roland TR-808, which swept over the music scene of the world, is now famous enough that there is no need to explain about it. A documentary film featuring the artists who love this machine has been released, and its soundtrack album is also out now. The film is available on Apple Music, but the soundtrack alone is even enjoyable.
It was in the beginning of 1980’s, when “Planet Rock” of Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force, just like a comet has struck right on to our music planet, then electronics start to infiltrate into the blood of R&B and Hip Hop that at the time seemed unconnected with digital approaches. But, what really existed there was TR-808. The spread-out of it did not see the end; if you just look over to Europe, the Techno figure, Richie Hawtin and the king of Brit-pop, New Order may not be explained without mentioning this machine, TR-808. Also Jam & Lewis, the long-time producers of Janet Jackson appear in the film, and THAT beat which we all know as her rhythm pattern could be found in the song by Shannon (“Let the Music Play” 1983) which is being included in the album. In the latter half of the album, featured are starting with Rave tracks by 808 State to recent Dubstep inclined tracks. This way, the album makes us feel the rhythms and vibes of TR-808 running through the veins of music streams, both on major and underground lines.
