2007年にRod Modellと共にEchospaceとして「The Coldest Season」をリリースしたStephen Hitchellのソロ名義である、Intrusionのフルアルバムのリマスター盤。このアルバムは、当初は2009年にリリースされ、ダブテクノの名盤としても知られる。このIntrusion名義でのリリースに先んじて、実は、Variant名義でもEchospaceに通じるドローン作品を出している。面白いのが、このVariantの「The Setting Sun」のアルバム・ジャケの写真は、Intrusionの「The Seduction of Silence」のジャケ写真と同じだが、色彩加工が違うものになっている。そして、更に、今回のリマスター盤は更にPhotoshopの加工がなされていて、違う色合いになっている。多分、Variant名義のアルバムの写真が最も自然派な感じになっていて、2009年のIntrusionから2014年のIntrusionに移行するにつれて、写真の色合いがケミカルになっているように感じる。

話は逸れたが、「The Seduction of Silence」のどこが名盤かというと…。ダブテクノというと、どうしてもBasic Channelからのミニマル感やEchospaceのような冷たいドローン感というものに包み込まれている感じがするが、このアルバムは、レゲエ・ダブのバックボーンを残しながらも、ルーツっぽい温度や湿度ではなく、どこかアーバンな温かみや、楽園を思わせるポップさをまとわせているところに魅力がある。IDMのような切ないメロディにダブが柔らかく絡み、Paul St. Hilaireのヴォーカルも天使の囁きのように聴こえる。絶妙なバランス感覚というのはこういうことを言うのだろう…と。

今作は、その「The Seduction of Silence」のリマスター盤に、未発表曲やライブ曲をまとめたボーナスディスク付の2枚組。リマスターの感じは、だいたい予想通りに、元のCDでは拾い辛かった細かい音がクリアに聴こえるようになっているが、これが好きかどうかは、本当に好みの問題かも知れない。ダブテクノ作品だけに、全体に霧がかかったようなリマスター前の音の方が良いと思う人もいくらかはいるだろう。ただ、ボーナスディスクに収録の曲はなかなか良いので、それだけのためにも買って良いのではないかと思う。特に最後の「Intrusion (Phase 90 Reshape)」は（ちなみに、Phase 90もStephen Hitchellの別名義）、ダブテクノをインダストリアル感のある、ハードなベースミュージックへと再構築したような曲で、かなり好きだ。





Eden, 5 Years Later

This album is a remastered version of Intrusion’s (a.k.a. Stephen Hitchell – who has released “The Cold Season” as Echospace in partnership with Rod Modell of Deepchord) debut album, “The Seduction of Silence”, which has been originally released in 2009, and is known as one of the best Dub Techno albums. Prior to this album, Stephen Hitchell had released a drone album, “The Setting Sun” under another project name, Variant. It is interesting that the cover art photo of this Variant’s album is also used for both of Intrusion’s albums in subject, but in different color hues for each of them. In Variant’s album, the photo bears a natural color of light green grass field, but it is processed into a cold blue photo in Intrusion’s album of 2009, and it gets more chemically processed looking as it turns into this remastered version of “The Seduction of Silence”.

Now, let me look back to the reason why “The Seduction of Silence” is said to be one of the best Dub Techno albums. It is our notion that Dub Techno consists of Basic Channel’s minimalism and Echospace’s drone aspect with cold air; and not forgetting the Dub power originating from Reggae factor, of course. However, in spite of having a roots Reggae aspect, I do not find much of Jamaican heat or sweatiness in this album, but rather some sweet warmness of ‘urban paradise’, which is being created by dub effects strangling with melancholic melody of IDM, with Paul St. Hilaire’s voice sounding like an angel’s whisper. And I love this sensitive balance of atmospheric deepness.

This 2CD pack album contains the remastered version of “The Seduction of Silence” and some rare tracks and live tracks never being provided physically before. Obviously, a lot of bits of sounds could be caught in the remastered version, if compared with the original version. However, whether you like the outcome or not is up to you. Some may feel more comfortable listening to the foggy original version for it sounds more atmospheric. However, I think it is worth getting this album, just for the second disc which includes pretty interesting mix tracks. My favorite track is the last track, “Intrusion (Phase 90 Reshape)” which is the mix by Phase 90 (also is Stephen Hitchell himself), that sounds like Dub Techno reconstructed into Industrial oriented Bass Music.
