旅なのか、夢なのか？

このデビューアルバムは、Claude Speeedが東南アジアの旅に出て、そこから得たインスピレーションによる作られたとされている。確かに、冒頭の曲は、雄大な中国大陸を感じさせる曲で、その雰囲気は坂本龍一の「ラストエンペラー」のサウンドトラックや「千のナイフ」を連想させる。そこから続く曲も、「君が代」のような、ゆったりとした極東的なアンビエントだ。ただ、突然驚かされるのが、3曲目で、いきなりシューゲーなギターが切なさをかき鳴らし、やがて、またアジアの地のフィールドレコーディングに雲隠れをしながら、仙水画の世界に消えて行ったりする。このまま東洋志向のアンビエントが続くのかと思いきや、4曲目以降は、本人も認めているように、Phillip Glass とSteve Reichの影響をいかにも受けたかのような、ピアノやヴァイオリンの曲が続く。（個人的には4曲目の曲は、細野晴臣の「フィルハーモニー」を思わせるホーンとコーラスの協奏で、面白味を感じるが…）最後に近づくにつれ、徐々に東洋志向は消えて行くようにも感じるが、やはり、それは、彼の旅の行程を表しているからなのだろうか？

このアルバムがClaude Speeedの旅と連動している感じを表現しているのは音楽だけでなく、CDに封入されているインレーカードでもあるのではないかとも思っている。CDには3枚のカードが封入されていて、うち2枚には、一人旅の際に持ち回るタバコケースや靴などといったものの写真が印刷されている。ただ、おもしろいのは、３枚目には、音楽仲間のTony JaguarとLWのそれぞれの夢の話のようなものが、引用されているという点。Claude Speeed自身も8曲目の曲は自分が見た海辺でピアノを弾く夢を描いたものと言っている。果たして、このアルバムは、アジアへの旅を経て、夢の中の第二の現実にでも導こうとしているのだろうか…。





Trip or Dream?

Claude Speeed has worked on his debut album during his trip throughout countries of East Asia. The air of Asian influence is quite obviously seen in the opening track of the album. The soundscape of the track is engulfed by a grand scale atmosphere like of mainland China, and it reminds me of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s Oscar winning soundtrack of “The Last Emperor” and his solo work, “Thousand Knives”. The following track flows very slowly with a taste of Far East ambience, resembling with the tempo of the national anthem of Japan. The third track, “Some Other Guy” starts in surprise with shoegaze guitar sound, and gradually gets smuggled by field recorded sounds of Far East, then fading into another ether of Chinese landscape. So far, the album seems to sound like an oriental flavored ambient album, but from the fourth track on, the tracks with piano and violins, pretty much influenced by Phillip Grass and Steve Reich –as Claude Speeed himself admits- start to dominate the storyline of the album. Is it like that the album’s oriental flavor ceases as it gets to the end, so as his trip through Asian countries reaches to its end?

Not only the music, but the cards enclosed in the CD seems to hint that the album relates with his story of the trip to Asia. There are three cards enclosed and pictures of travelling paraphernalia: shoes, cigarette box, etc. are printed in the two of them. However, it is quite interesting that on the third card, there printed are the quotes of Tony Jaguar and LW (they could be musical friends of Claude Speeed –I’m not sure); and the quotes look like the stories of the dreams that they actually have dreamed of. Moreover, Claude Speeed admits that the eighth track, “Viscount Stair” is the track written based on his dream of himself playing piano on a seashore. So is this album about a story of his trip to Asia, gradually leading to some second reality existing in his dream? I don’t know…
