表現不可能なことを表現する

個人的には、Token Recordsといえば、ハードでダークなテクノ。ただ、必ずしもメタリックというわけではなく、金属の腐食や泥を思わせる重いビートのテクノという感じだ。しかし、この人については、それだけではなく、実に切ないIDMのような美しさのあるメロディも展開するので、個人的には、とても好きなタイプの音楽でもある。

このアルバムの1曲目はビートもそれほどなく、The Future Sound Of Londonのような、ちょっと不気味なアトモスフェリックな曲となっている。そして2曲目の「Birth」は確かに生命の誕生を連想させる、脈打つ鼓動のようなビートに柔らかな光を感じるようなメロディの曲。ただし、この曲の直後に今度は死を予感させる「Requiem」というタイトルが続き、レクイエムには似つかわしくない硬派なビートに眩暈を引き起こすようなイライラする音を乗せている。以降、曲のタイトルを見ると「Plaintive（悲しげな）」「Lullaby（ララバイ）」「Vallecula（体のくぼみ）」「Winter（冬）」「Petrichor（雨が降ったときに地面から上がる匂い）」などとあり、なかなか詩的な雰囲気を醸し出しているタイトルが多い。相変わらず、ビートは硬質だが、タイトルをうまく表現する繊細な曲作りがなされているのがよくわかる。「Winter」はすごくわかりやすく、雪を踏みしめて歩く感じが表現されている。個人的に好きなのは、「Vallecula」で、肉体の関節が立てるような音でビートを形成し、ダリのシュールレアリスムの絵画にあるような歪んだ肉体の上を蟻がいくつものくぼみを通りながら歩いているような曲だ。「Petrichor」も雨がザッザッと降っている中、地面からモワッとしたものが湧き上がるような音になっている。どの曲もタイトルをイメージしながら聴くと、その世界が目に浮かび、もはや硬派なミニマルテクノだという事実を忘れてしまうかのようだ。

そして実は、このCDの中面には、イギリスの作家のAldous Huxleyの言葉が引用されている。

After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.
「沈黙」の次に、表現が不可能な事をほぼ表現できてしまうのは「音楽」である。

きっと、この言葉のような音楽をInigo Kennedyは作りたいのかも知れないと、ふと思った。





Expressing the Inexpressible

I have a personal impression that artists of Token Records are the ones who play hard and dark Minimal Techno, not so metallic, but with smells of decaying irons and dirt. However, what makes me fascinated about Inigo Kennedy’s music is the melancholic IDM sound flowing over such hard Techno beats.

The almost beat-less opening track has the same eerie atmosphere with the music of The Future Sound of London. The second track, “Birth” has beats pulsing like some life form’s heartbeat, and are matched well with the melody imaging warmth of light which seems to symbolize “Life”. However, the track called, “Requiem” – which is supposed to remind you the image of “Death” - follows right after the track “Birth”, and it does not even sound like a requiem for its hard beat and irritating buzzing sound whirling all the way. Other track titles follow as, “Plaintive”, ”Lullaby”, “Vallecula (meaning an anatomical groove) ”, “Winter”, “Petrichor (meaning the scent of rain on dry earth) ”, and I think that these titles themselves literally have some kind of poetic air, and feel that Inigo Kennedy is good at expressing such ambience with sensitive care, although at the same time, all of the tracks do beat quite hardly. In the track “Winter”, it is quite obvious that the artist is trying to express the sound of people walking on snow grounds. My favorite track is “Vallecula”, in which I hear rhythms made by bones and joints, and its melody makes me imagine ants crawling on crooked human body parts like in surrealistic art works of Dali. “Petrichor” expresses well the situation when the rain falls with rattling sound, some kind of ether diffusing up from the ground. Likewise, if you listen to the tracks by being aware of the literal meanings of each titles, you can well visualize the tracks’ atmosphere, and after all, find yourself not anymore aware that the tracks are all in the same hue of hard Techno.

If you look at the inner page of the CD cover, you will find a quote from Aldous Huxley’s writings.

“After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.”

I have a feeling that Inigo Kennedy may have tried to create something like this.
