アトモスフェリックな世界の探求

Deepchordの初期のヴァイナルのリマスターCD3連作のうちの2枚目である今作は、前作がミニマル・テクノな色合いが強く、フロアとの親和性が高い作品群が多かったのに対して、比較的アトモスフェリックな仕上がりの曲ばかりでまとめる形になっている。全て2001年にリリースされたもので、前作はMike SchommerとRod Modellそれぞれの楽曲から成っていたが、こちらは二人でDeepchordと名乗っての作品集となっている。

まず、最初の3曲は、2001年3月に黄色いファーストプレスがリリースされた「dc10」からの曲である。ただし、最初の2曲はCD用にエディットされているのが残念だ。「dc10-1」はイルカの鳴き声のような子供の声が遠くで聴こえ、フィールドレコーディング的な感じも出している、柔らかいアトモスフェリックな曲。おもしろい曲なのが「dc10-3」で、ボサノヴァやジャズの雰囲気のあるダブテクノで、この辺りはRod Modellのセンスを感じるところでもあり、黄色いヴァイナルというのもテイスト的に合っていて良いと思う。

その後の3曲は2001年4月に赤いファーストプレスでリリースされた「dc11」からの曲。「dc11-1」はゆっくりと空間に鉛のグライダーが円を描いて漂うような立体感があって好きだ。「dc11-3」は、コオロギの鳴き声が干渉しながら、波の逢瀬を感じるという、ミニマルな彼らの曲のなかでは、珍しく「自然」を意識した音が使われている。

最後の3曲はファーストプレスがホワイトで、2001年6月にリリースされた「dc12」からの曲。こちらは、先の2枚に比べると若干、フロア寄りな曲ばかりになっている。「dc12-1」は硬く、弾まないゴムの玉を床に打ち付けるような、バウンシーなリズムが個性的で、終盤にかけては、サンバのように盛り上がる。「dc12-2」は、太いベースが主体になっていて、レゲエのサウンドシステムっぽいトランス感とグルーヴ感がある。それでいて、上空にスペースオートモビルが飛び交うブレードランナーのような近未来世界を思わす世界観があって好きだ。「dc12-3」は、フロア寄りなバウンシーなリズムに太いコイルの音が都会的に感じる。この「dc12」については、プロモ版のヴァイナルの存在も確認されているので、やはり、フロア向けということを意識してリリースしたのかも知れない。

この時期のDeepchordは、総じて柔らかい雰囲気のダブテクノを展開しており、目をつぶると、彼らが描こうとしている世界が目に浮かぶような、そんな美しさがある。





In Search for the Atmosphere

This album is the second version of remastered CD series of Deepchord’s early Eps’ collection. “dc07/dc08/dc09”, the album that has been released prior to this album, consists of the tracks more on the side of Minimal Techno, whereas this album consists of Dub Techno tracks with some atmosphere of gentleness. All the tracks of the album have being originally released in 2001, and they are all written by Deepchord i.e. Rod Modell + Mike Schommer, while the tracks in the prior remastered album are collectively the solo works of the two.

The first three tracks of the album are the tracks from “dc10”, which originally has been released in a yellow Vinyl format in March of 2001. Sorry that the first two tracks are being edited in the CD version of the album. In “dc10-1”, I hear voices of children shrieking like dolphins, and I imagine that field recorded sounds may have been used in this atmospheric track. “dc10-3” is interesting in the sense that it has a Bossa Nova or Jazzy feeling mixed well with deep Dub Techno groove. I think that Rod Modell is taking a good part in creating such taste in this track, and feel that yellow color of the Vinyl matches well to that mood too.

The following three tracks are from the red colored Vinyl, “dc11” that has been released in April, 2001. In “dc11-1”, it is as if an iron glider circling slowly overhead, creating a three dimensional sound field. I hear crickets chirping and waves rippling gently in “dc11-3”; and I should say that this track is one of the rare case in which Deepchord is using ‘natural’ sound in their minimal track.

The last three tracks are the tracks from “dc12”, a white Vinyl that has been released in June, 2001. In comparison with the tracks included in the two preceding Vinyls, the tracks in this are more danceable. Lazy bouncing rhythm of hard rubber balls is characteristic in “dc12-1”, which gradually elevates its tension towards Samba-like music. “dc12-2” has the bass sound of definite thickness, and has a good groove and an air of trance that reminds me of a Reggae Sound System; but at the same time, the track is filled with the Sci-Fi atmosphere in which space automobiles travel in the sky, just like in the film, “Blade Runner”. “dc12-3” is a danceable track with jaunty rhythm matched with sounds of fat coils stretching, so to add slightly an urban taste to the music. A few Promo versions are found to exit for “dc12”, and that fact also seems to bear out my understanding saying that it is a danceable piece.

As a whole, Deepchord’s music of this period is fairly gentle and makes us visualize the atmosphere created beautifully in their style of Dub Techno.
