Deepchordの初期作品のリマスターシリーズ第3弾で、「dc13」「dc14」「dc16」を収録している。でも、流れとして「dc15」だけ抜けているのが謎に思えるかも知れないが、なんのことはない、「dc15」は現在では、Deepchordから脱退をしているMike Schommerのvon Schommer名義でのソロアルバムということらしい。こちらのアルバムはかなりの限られた数量でのリリースだったようだが、ウェブで検索をしてみると、結構、試聴ができるので、ぜひ探してみていただきたい。かなり無機質というか、硬派な金属音が多用されている、ミニマルテクノに近いダブテクノで、個人的には結構、好きな作品でもある。ただ、今回ここで紹介するアルバムには含まれていないので、話はここまでにする。とはいえ、Deepchordの残党でもあるRod Modellが、Deepchord名義でリリースの今作の中に「dc15」を入れないで、その後にリリースされているRod Modell本人のソロ名義の「dc16」を収録しているのには、暗にそこでMike Schommerの脱退があり、Deepchordの分岐点を指し示しているようにも感じる。

では、このアルバムに収録の楽曲について簡単に触れたいと思う。「dc13」（当初はクリア・ヴァイナルとしてリリース）と「dc14」（当初はブルー・ヴァイナルとしてリリース）はいずれも2001年にRod ModellとMike Schommer 二人の作としてリリースされた作品。1曲目は静かで、ゆったりとしたダブテクノで時間を埋めて、曲のちょうど半分くらいから控えめにツカッツカッというビートが鳴り出すという10分にも及ぶ曲。3曲目は細いコイルのような音でリズムが絡む比較的ダンサブルな曲。「dc14」からの4曲目はディープハウスなノリで弾んだ感じで、5曲目はデトロイト・テクノの亡霊を感じるダブテクノ。6曲目は遠くからだんだん機関車が走って来て、いよいよ近くまで来て、大きな音を立てて通り過ぎて行くような緊迫感が終盤にある9分超の曲。いずれも、オーソドックスなダブテクノマナーの曲で、それ以前の楽曲と比べるとまとまりはあるが、若干、行き詰まり感を感じる作品群になっている。

そして7曲目から10曲目はRod Modell単独名義により、2003年にリリースされた「dc16」からの曲だが、先行した6曲とは明らかにアプローチやテイストが違うのがわかる。タイトルも全てそれまでとは違い、「Untitled」ではなく、「Lama Temple（ラマ寺院）」「Solar Cross（「太陽十字」という先史時代に使われていた記号で、地球を意味するとされる）」「Hexcraft（魔術の一種）」「Mars Oil（火星のオイル）」などと言った、ミステリアスな言葉が付けられている。 「Lama Temple」はポヨンポヨンというシンセでウェットな雰囲気を出し、ドラムブラシのような音で、ほんのりジャズ風味。「Solar Cross」もグルーヴ感すら感じるハウシーなナンバー。「Hexcraft」もよりダンサブルだが、曇りガラスを優しくはじくようなメロディが心地よい。最後の曲の「Mars Oil」はゆるゆると空間が歪んだような音の反復で、曲の題名通り「火星のオイル」という質感だ。Rod Modellがソロ名義で実に伸び伸びと独自の世界観を最後の4曲で描き出しているのがよくわかる。まさにMike Schommerが去ってからのDeepchordの新しい幕開けをここで示しているようにも思える。





A Turning Point

This is the third album of the remastered collections of Deepchord’s early works, including the tracks from Eps namely, “dc13”, “dc14”, and “dc16”. You may notice that “dc15” is skipped out from the album, and I assume that it is because “dc15” is a solo work created by Mike Schommer who has left the group after this release. It seems that only a limited number of “dc15” has been released and it is not so easy to purchase it now, but is possible to listen to it in some web sites. The tracks are more like Minimal Techno mixed on to Dub Techno, and you can hear pretty much of heavy mechanical sounds in them. I personally do like this album, but here, I would not go further on writing about it. But still, I have a feeling that by closing the album with the tracks of “dc16” and skipping “dc15” out, Rod Modell, the only left member of Deepchord is trying to suggest the fact that a breakaway of Mike Schommer had taken place and then, a new start of Deepchord has started at the time when “dc16” has been released.

Let me now roughly talk about the tracks included in the remastered album. Rod Modell and Mike Schommer have worked together to release “dc13” (originally in a clear Vinyl format) and “dc14” (originally in a blue Vinyl format) in 2001. The opening track of the album is as long as more than ten minutes, and it starts slowly filling up the half way of the timeline with solid DubTechno style, and gaining some light beats later. The third track is rather danceable with characteristic rhythms sounding like thin metallic coils tangling around you. The following three tracks are from “dc14”; the first one is Deep House oriented and the second track sounds like Dub Techno haunted by Detroit Techno. The last track from “dc14” is a long track of nine minutes, which starts with the sound like a train approaching from a far distance and finally reaching very close to you with very tense and loud beats. All of the tracks from “dc13” and “dc14” are fairly consistent in keeping the common style of Dub Techno, and it seems as if they are losing their way out from that style.

The following four tracks of the album are from “dc16”, the EP which has been released by Rod Modell (and not particularly using the group name Deepchord) in 2003. By listening to them, it becomes obvious that they are quite different from the preceding tracks from “dc13” and “dc14”. Firstly, the titles of the preceding Eps were all “Untitled”, while tracks of “dc16” are titled with words of mysterious taste such as “Lama Temple”, “Solar Cross”, “Hexcraft”, and “Mars Oil”. “Lama Temple” has a humid atmosphere including sounds like water drops, but slightly Jazzy with whisking beats like that of drum brushes. “Solar Cross” is a Deep House oriented track, and “Hexcraft” is also a danceable track with a characteristic tapping sound which has the feeling as if it was made on a frosted glass. The last track from “dc16”, which is “Mars Oil” consists of repetitious winding sounds of slick ether that fit well with the image of the title. By listening to the last four tracks of the album, I should admit that Rod Modell has become very creative after getting alone. So it may be true to say that Deepchord has opened its new way out after Mike Schommer’s walkout.
