光が示すもの

坂本龍一とのコラボ作「Ancient Future」以来の新作ということになる本作だが、日本版のみDVDが同梱されていて、このアルバムに付随する彼の映像作品を見ることができる。本来、彼はマルチメディア・アーティストというわけなので、映像と音楽が融合した状態で作品に触れるのが一番なのだが、とりあえずは、まずは音楽だけということで、アルバムのジャケットイメージのビジュアル情報以外全く見ない状態でCDを聴いてみた。

アルバムのジャケのごとく、薄雲が涼しい太陽の光に照らされてゆっくりと漂う、そんな雰囲気のアンビエントな世界で幕が開く。それから、メロディはほんのり切なく、ギターが柔らかく滑らかに流れ、エレクトロニカの雰囲気を漂わせる。5曲目の「Connect」では、それまで続いた明るい雲の流れが、だんだん暗くなり、突然のダイナミズムで、ダブステにあるような閃きから、風のダンスが始まる。少し雨の音も聴こえるように感じる。6曲目の「Wide」は地面から水蒸気が太陽の光に向かって昇るようなアンビエントだが、後半のオカリナを連想させる音色が個性的だ。

さて、問題の映像だが、DVDを持っていない人はこちらからも見られるのでぜひ。アンビエント音楽が乗せられる映像は、昔から自然をモチーフにした、いわゆる「環境映像」的なものと決まっている。Willitsのこれも、おおよそは、その路線ではあるが、この人のこの映像においては「光」の存在感が印象的で、そこに何か意味が秘められているようで気になってしまう。今回の彼のアルバムでもほとんどの曲は「サーッ」と言うホワイトノイズで包まれている。そして映像を見ると、そのホワイトノイズは雲であれ、山であれ、波であれ、森であれ、花であれ、人の間であれ、ありとあらゆる映像の中で光がチラチラと輝いている描写と呼応しているように感じる。また、万華鏡的な映像効果を使って、自然界の姿を曼荼羅のように、画面の中央で集約させるような場面もいくらかあり、ややスピリチュアルな雰囲気も醸し出してはいるが、これも自然の風景にうまく溶け込んでいるので、あざとく感じない。自分はこれを見て、宮崎駿の「千と千尋の神隠し」で主人公がごく普通の風景からいつの間にか不思議な世界に迷い込む、その異次元空間への入り口のようなものを思い出したりもした。とはいえ、Willitsのこの映像を見て、そこにある「光」や自然の動きが何を象徴するのか、それは、見る側それぞれで、思いを巡らせていただきたい。





What ‘Light’ Leads To

This album seems to be the latest solo album of Christopher Willits since the release of the collaboration album with Ryuichi Skamoto. The Japan version of the album has an extra DVD disc attached to the CD, and it includes his visual work created for the music of the album. Christopher Willits is known as a multimedia artist, so I guess it is best to enjoy his music and visual work all together as one, but first of all, I will listen to the music alone; but allow me, I have seen the visual image of the album’s cover art already.

As could be imagined from the cover art of the album, the opening track is an ambient track which makes you see light clouds sailing slowly in the clear sunlight. The following tracks are of the same atmosphere, but sounding much like electronica tracks with melancholic tunes of guitars flowing gently. The fifth track, “Connect” is a relatively dynamic track in which the light clouds flowing in the music gradually get dark and winds start to dance after an uplifting flash likely found in those Dubstep tracks that we have heard quite ago. I hear some rain falling at the end of it too. Then it moves to the sixth track, “Wide” in which vapor from wet ground rises towards the sunlight is well expressed; and the sound resembling that of an ocarina closes the track creating an interesting atmosphere.

Now then, the visual work of the album in full version could be seen HERE, and I would like to leave some comments on this also. It is well known that most of the visual motion pictures matched on to Ambient music would look like something called as “Environmental Pictures” which consist of great visuals of the nature in general. Willits’ work for this album could be counted as one of those, but there is one thing that makes me feel unique about this work. I find an outstanding presence of ‘light’ in the film and cannot ignore guessing what is implied in it. There exists the sound of white noise throughout most of the tracks in the album, and by looking at the visual work of the album, I feel that the sound of the white noise shimmers in concerto with glittering ‘lights’ appearing in between clouds, waves, woods, flowers, and persons that are featured in the film. Also, there are some parts in the film where kaleidoscopic visual effects are given to create a mandala like formation in less obtrusive and natural way, which makes me imagine some spiritual implications in the scenes. This reminds me of a scene in Hayao Miyazaki’s film, “Spirited Away”, where the starring finds the entrance leading to the strange dimension of unknown, while she is wandering around in the woods. However, these all come from my personal point of view. It is up to you to see what is implied in the visual expressions of the ‘light’ and the nature in this film.
