光と闇のアンビエンス

どうしても、raster-notonからのリリースということで、グリッチな感じを期待してしまうが、前作の「OR」からして、少し違う感じのするアーティストでもある。前作はやんわりと女性や男性ヴォーカルを入れていたり、サイケなギターが遠くでうねっていたりで、どちらかといえば、ダーク・アンビエントな雰囲気を醸し出していた。とはいえ、機械音が細かく多用されていたりするアブストラクト感は、raster-noton的なポイントは抑えていたのかも知れないが…、結構、妙にバラエティに富んだ、非ミニマルな感じだった。

ただ、今作は、あれから3年のときを経て、すっかりインダストリアルなハードさを一貫して持つ内容になっている。イマドキ的と言えば、イマドキ的なダークさと重さでもあるが、ちょっと他のそれ的なアーティストと違うのは、曲の中に妙にキラキラした音が差し込むところ。かなりゴツイ重機が漆黒の粉じんを巻き上げながら、劣化したビルの破壊をしている中に、一筋の日光が差し込むようなキラキラ感。その光の筋を小さな蝶が舞うような音も聞こえる。こんな雰囲気で、どうしても思い出すのが、マイケル・ジャクソン「This Is It」の中に出て来る「Earth Song」のPV。それでは、アマゾンとかの密林に森林伐採の重機が入って来て、森を燃やしたりしながら破壊するのだが、自然を愛する少女が小さな木の芽を守り、細い光が差し込んで来る。こんな感じで、陰鬱なハードさで攻めながら、どこか気持ちを昇華させてくれるようなフェーズを差し込んでいるようなアルバムだ。それを象徴するような曲として、「L’envol」という名の曲がある。フランス語で「飛翔」的な意味の言葉だが、全体としてインダストリアルだのダーク・アンビエントだのと評されるアルバムに、こんな題名の曲があるというのが、なんとも言えないアンビエンスだ。




Dark vs Light Ambience

When you find it’s another raster-noton artist, you may expect for some glitchy sound again, but Kanding Ray is not strictly a glitch artist in the first place. At least that is my understanding, even as far as I recall the feeling I had after listening to his last album, “OR”. The album “OR” does not sound much glitchy, and not even so minimal. It has some variety of sound aspects: women and men vocals, psychedelic guitar sound wrapped up in dust of mechanical sounds. Such abstract mechanical sounds could be called glitchy sounds, but I would prefer expressing the album more on the way nearer to the side of dark ambient.

After three years from then, “Solens Arc” is now been released, and this sounds very much industrial. It is true that many electronic music artists tend to create industrial oriented tracks now a days, so Kanding Ray could be the another one of them too. Yes, most of the tracks in the album sound like heavy machineries destroying block buildings. You can hear coal dusts swirling around. However, within such dark and hard rumble, one little string of light runs through its atmosphere. It is even as if you can hear butterflies flying through that thread of light. The track “L’envol” is so significant in this style, it pours out well, this feeling of temporary sublimation. As a whole, I really like this dark vs light contrast approach in this album, and think it has unique sense of ambience.
