「板前テクノ」

ApplicationはThe Black Dogのメンバーのうち、Ken Downie以外の二人によるユニットで、今回、初めてこの二人でのアルバムを発売した。このアルバムは日本の「板前」に倣って、規律を重んじた様式で制作したという説明がなされている。それは通常、The Black Dogでは、スタジオに入ってから音楽を作り出すという方法を取るようだが、Applicationの場合は２年の歳月をかけて計画やルールを練ってレコーディングをしたという意味で、その比喩を使ったらしい。ただ、このように日本の様式美を意識した表現をするあたりからして、イメージ戦略面でも律儀な感じがする人たちである。

アルバムの始まりと終わりを「Ambient A」と「Ambient B」という、対になった感じで曲をまとめているところも、几帳面な感じがする。幕開けの「Ambient A」はブライアン・イーノに敬意を表している感じで、終わりの「Ambient B」は宇宙電波の嵐に呑まれて行くような恐怖的アンビエントのように感じる。３曲目の「Steve Reich’s Ice Cream Van」もタイトルから見て取れるように、柔らかさのあるガラス玉演技的な音楽である。このように、彼らはストイックにアンビエントやミニマル音楽に敬意を表してはいるのだが、一方で、インダストリアル的な基準値を一定に保つことも大事にしているように感じる。インダストリアルとは言っても、決して重く、不快なものではない。それゆえに一定のインテリジェンスを感じるという点でも、Black Dog Productionsの「Bytes」の雰囲気をどうしても連想してしまう。ただ、「Bytes」が魚眼レンズ的に広がるIDMの世界なら、こちらは鉄の針金で括られた透明のキューブの中に閉じ込められたIDMの世界のような…、そんな愛おしさがある。





‘Itamae’ Techno

Application is a duo of the other two of The Black Dog i.e. the members excluding Ken Downie, the original member of the band; and it is their first album which is being released. It is said that, this album has been produced by following strict rules and forms, as in the way how ‘Itamae’ of Japanese sushi chef makes sushi dishes. In general, The Black Dog seems to create an album in their studio almost without having a certain plan, but Application has taken two years for planning and making rules for their recording. In that sense, they may have used such metaphor of ‘Itamae’. However, the fact that they express their way in relation with Japanese formalism shows how much they are conscientious even in explaining their attitude.

The album’s opening track and the closing track are called “Ambient A” and “Ambient B”, which pair like bookend tracks, and in this sense too, the group makes the album seem quite orderly. In the opening track, “Ambient A”, they seem to show some respect to Brian Eno, and the album ends with the agitating “Ambient B” that makes me feel taken away by a storm of cosmic airwaves. From the title of the third track being, “Steve Reich’s Ice Cream Van”, I tend to imagine it is a light version music for glass bead games. This way, they somehow seem to be pretty stoic in showing respect to ambient music and minimal music, but on the other hand, they are also very consistent in keeping Industrial taste in their music to a certain level. However, their music being Industrial does not mean being heavy or harsh. This is the reason why I feel that their music sound ‘intelligent’ to a certain extent, which reminds me of the atmosphere found in “Bytes” of Black Dog Productions. However, I would say if the world of IDM in “Bytes” is like seeing it through a fisheye lens, then Application’s music is like seeing it in a transparent cube corded up by an iron wire.
