ここじゃない何処か

SBTRKTという名前が匿名性を意識した名前だということは有名な話だが、それでもデビュー作は、まだ自分を引き算した（Subtract=SBTRKT）感じが今回の作品と比べれば薄かったのだろうと思う。デビュー作で、てっきりSBTRKT本人が歌っていると思っていた歌はSamphaという人が歌っていたわけだが、それでもポスト・ダブステという括りにまとめられて、有名になった。ただ、今回は、いわゆるコラボ曲じゃない楽曲の方が少ないうえに、幅広いジャンルを横断するような曲のバラエティだ。まとまりがないと言えば、そうかもしれないが、デビュー作では海を泳いで何種類かの魚と戯れていたのが、今作になってからは陸地に上がって、土を感じ、様々な動植物に触れているような、そんな進化を感じる。デビュー作が「ダブステ・アーティストが色々なシンガーとコラボしたポスト・ダブステ」ならば、今作は「ビートメイカーが色々なジャンルのアーティストをプロデュースしたベース・ミュージック」とでも言おうか…。

いくつかの曲はMassive Attackのような暗さとヒップホップな感じがあったり、FKA twigsのようなR&Bの雰囲気を持つ曲もある。更にはシンセポップやロックのフィールドにも足が伸びている楽曲もあり、UKポップのあらゆる側面を取り入れた楽曲がてんこ盛りという感じだ。ただ、色々な資料を見る限り、このアルバムのタイトル通り、SBTRKTはここから自分がどこへたどり着くのかわからない感じをおおいに楽しんでいるようだ。また、アルバムのジャケアートも虹色の水銀のように輝く手がエレクトロニクスを象徴するのであれば、その手の上に乗る黒い四足の哺乳動物はエレクトロニクスに身を委ねるR&Bやヒップホップ音楽を象徴するような存在なのかも知れない。そして、それがまさに、このアルバムの「いったいどこにたどり着くの？」の状態を表しているのかも知れない。





Somewhere Other than Here

It is well known that the artist’s project name, SBTRKT is given to keep his anonymity. As I listen to his second album, it becomes clear that he was ‘subtract (SBRKT)-ing’ less of himself in the debut album compared to the amount of this one. I remember that many people have thought that SBTRKT himself is singing in the debut album, but it was actually Sampha who was singing most of the songs. However still, the album made a success by being broadly accepted as a post-Dubstep album. Now for the second album’s case, tracks in collaboration with other artists do exceed in number and they cross over various music genres. It may be said that the album lacks unity in this sense, but I would say that it is more like the case that an evolution has taken place, so to speak, the debut album was like SBTRKT having a rendez-vous with few types of sea creatures in the ocean, while he brings him ashore, touches the earth, and embraces various types of animals and plants in this latest album. The debut album has been said to be a “post-Dubstep album of a Dubstep newcomer collaborating with singers of various types”, but this album may be like a “bass music album of a beat maker producing artists of various genres”.

A few of the tracks do possess gloomy HipHop feeling like that of Massive Attack, and I also find some tracks of R&B taste that remind me of FKA twigs. Moreover, there are Pop tracks that step into the field of Synth and Rock tastes, and many others sound like having aspects of UK Pop diversity. As far as I read him talk in few press interviews, I feel that SBTRKT is having fun not knowing where to go as he literary implies in the album’s title. I also start to wonder what the cover art of the album says; it might be like, if the hand of the rainbow colored quicksilver stands for Electronic Music, then it could mean that the four legged black mammal which may symbolize R&B and HipHop music is yielding itself in the hand of the electronics. This may well be showing the situation of the album, “Wonder Where We Land”.
