夢の中へと溶ける

Sebastian MullaertはMinilogueのメンバーとして有名だが、ソロでの活動を意識するなかで、イスラエルのアンビエント系のプロデューサーでもあるEitan Reiterと出会い、このアルバムの制作に流れ着いた。Eitan Reiterについては馴染みがないが、多分、このアルバムでは、Sebastian Mullaertの本来のヒプノティックな世界にオリエンタルな要素を添える役割を果たしているのだと思う。

さて、このアルバムだが、1枚を通して聴くと、まさに昼下がりに昼寝をして、夢を見て、目覚めようとするところまでの意識感覚を表現しているような作品に感じる。誰もが経験をしたことのある、意識が薄れて行って、深い眠りにつき、少ししてからだんだんと自分の周りの音や光を感じて、目が覚めて行くという一連の感覚だ。アルバムの1曲目の「Enter the Spiral」は、森の中で泉が湧き出ているような透明感を心地よく感じ、その世界に引き込まれて行く。そして、2曲目の「Dissolve」という曲名は「溶け込む」という意味で、意識が薄れて行く中、彼方でどこかの先住民を思わせる人々に呼び止められたり、空間の歪みの霧に体が絡み、引っ張られたり、柔らかい世界なのに、どんどんと意識が混乱して行き、遂には、渦に呑まれたと思ったら、いつの間にかヒプノティックなハウスになり、踊り出す自分がいるというような曲だ。この曲は、かなり尺の長い曲で、これだけでも十分にトリップ感を味わえる。ただ、ここまでだと、単なるサイケなアンビエントという感じだが、3曲目の「Water Burns Air」では、意識の混濁がミニマルな世界で実現されることになる。例えば、部屋の中に色々な電子機器が置かれていると、それらから発せられる微細なヒシヒシと言うモーターや電波の音が部屋を満たしている。それに加えて、部屋の中にはあらゆる匂いや光の揺らぎが入り組んで漂っている。そういう感触は普段の生活の中では、あまり意識されないが、うとうとと眠りに差し掛かろうとしているときには、それらの微細な音や電波などが、それまで体験したことがないような大きな音で聞こえたり、強い感覚で感知されるものである。そのような感覚をこの曲は表現しているようだ。この延長線上にある曲は、この後のオリエンタルなミニマルナンバーやアシッドナンバーに続いて収録の６曲目の「No Escape」として現れる。そこでは、ざわつく電子音の中、白魚のような光の糸が遠くで時折、飛び交っている。そして、いつの間にか、自分がベルトコンベアーの上を歩かされているのに気付き、そのベルトコンベアーの速度がどんどん速くなるのに合わせて、白魚の数も増え、大群となり自分を取り巻く。どんどんスピードが増して、息が切れる。限界に達すると、みるみる体が宙に浮き、走る下界を見下ろすようになる。下界がだんだん遠のき、意識も消えて行く。次の「You are the Proof of Heaven」では、宙の星に囲まれ浮遊し、「Falling Apart into One」では、深い眠りに入って行くような静寂と心地よい鼓動のようなリズムと鳥のさえずりにも聴こえる電子音が聞こえる。長い無音に近い時間を経て始まる「Faith」は、まさに光の国にいるかのような夢の世界のアンビエント。昇華をし続けてから、だんだんと部屋に充満する電子機器から出る電波音が大きくなり目覚めが近いことを予感させる。

Sebastian Mullaertは、あるインタビューで「自分は今自分がいる場所の一部である」という言葉を発している。きっとそれは、このアルバムにあるような、眠りを介した意識の混濁により、自分の周りを取り巻くものと自分が溶け合うような、そんな感覚を意味しているのかも知れない。





Be Dissolved into Your Dream

Sebastian Mullaert well known as a member of Minilogue meets an Ambient oriented producer Eitan Reiter from Israel, and flows into the production of a collaboration album. I am not quite aware of Eitan Reiter’s works, but imagine that he takes some part in adding an oriental essence to Sebastian Mullaert’s hypnotic style.

If you listen to the album thoroughly, you will find that it is a piece which expresses well a sense of being led into a drowsy situation early in one afternoon, then getting into a dreaming sleep, and gradually waking up to your consciousness. I think that everyone should have experienced the same routine: getting sleepy and losing consciousness, going to a deep sleep, and then gradually getting aware of sounds and lights surrounding you for waking up. As it is so, the album’s opening track, “Enter the Spiral” is a track of an enchanting clear water spring flowing in the woods, and it pulls you into the world of the album. The following track, “Dissolve” is a long hypnotic track in which aborigine-like people call you to stop, while you are being caught and pulled by the warping ether surrounding you. The atmosphere is gentle, but is filled with swirl of confusion that draws you into a whirlpool, and then it leads you out to a dance floor of Hypno House. Up till here sounds like some Psychedelic Ambient music, but in the third track, “Water Burns Air”, your consciousness starts to fade away by its Minimal attitude. Imagine that you are left in your room with various electric devices. The room will be filled with microscopic hissing sounds made by motors and electromagnetic waves of such devices. Also, there will be fluctuations of smells and lights interweaving with each other in the room. These are what you would not recognize normally in your everyday life, but when you get drowsy, such microscopic sounds and airwaves gradually start to sound loud than ever in your ears. It is as if the track is expressing such particular situation. The track that follows as an extension to this comes after tracks of Minimal and Acid House with slight oriental feeling. This track, “No Escape” appears out with stirring electronic sounds and strings of lights like white bait flying around. Then you find yourself put on to a conveyor belt gradually speeding up as white bait start to swarm around you. As the conveyor gains more speed, you would have to run faster and finally reaches to the limit of the speed as you start floating into the air. It becomes like flying far up to the sky, and the ground gets further and further away from you. Then gradually feel like losing your consciousness again. It is like floating in the space with stars in “You are the Proof of Heaven”, and you can hear your heart beat of silence and chirping of electronic birds in “Falling Apart into One”. The closer track, “Faith” starts with a long silence and leads you to a heavenly ambient world, but electronic hissing sounds of your room get noisy gradually and, you start to feel that it is time to wake up.

Sebastian Mullaert says that “You are a part of the surroundings that you live in”. I think that he here says so, as to mean that you will be dissolved in the surroundings as your consciousness fades away when being drowsy. And that very feeling is well expressed in this album.
