ほのかなオリエンタリズム

ミニマル、ドローン、ネオ・クラシックを巻き込んだ、あらゆるプロデューサーによるアンビエント寄りの作品を集めたコンピレーション第3弾。タイトル通り静寂を愉しむということもあるが、幻想的な世界がクラシカルなストリングスと電子音で展開される、玉手箱のようなアルバムだ。

まずはHauschkaのピアノ音楽でありながら、ピアノ線をつまびく音がレコードの雑音のように散りばめられた曲で始まり、ルーマニアのPetre Inspirescuがスリリングな電子昆虫の羽音に合わせたピアノ即興で応戦する。続いて、ドイツの電子音楽の魔術師のRoman Fleugelは、ぽかぽかとした陽気の中で、光の玉が舞っているよう世界を描き、DJ Sprinklesとしても知られるTerre Thaemlitzのリミックスによる「Nobody’s in This Classroom」は確かに誰かが講義をしているようなつぶやき音から、イルカの鳴き声のようなトランペット音とギーギーという電子音の水中へ移行するレフトフィールド感を出している。ベルリンの暗さをまとうReconditeは、どこか見知らぬ惑星の森の中を真っ暗な夜に彷徨う感じの曲で個性を発揮している。Smallvilleからのリリースでディープハウスの印象があるLawrenceはゴリゴリとしたリズムなのに朝靄が太陽に向かって昇るような、彼流のアンビエントを展開している。Kompaktよりジャパネスクなエレクトロニックアルバムを出しているVermontは細野晴臣の「ホタル」のような雰囲気から次第にスチームが噴出する工場のような世界へ向かう音楽を展開していて面白い。Kuniyuki TakahashiのプロジェクトKossはネオ・クラシカルなピアノの背後で静かな機械音を這わせて、John Robertsはオリエンタルなリズムとクラシカルなストリングスの交差が特徴的だ。　

本作は日本のレーベルからのリリースというだけあって、ほんのりオリエンタルな感じが心地よい1枚といえる。





A Faint Orientalism

Various producers of Minimal, Drone, and Neo-Classic fields contribute their ambient oriented works for this album which is the third version of the series. As it says in the title of the album, you can well enjoy tranquil atmospheres created in each of the tracks, and you can also experience worlds of fantasy spun out by tunes of classical strings and electronic sound streams harmonizing.

The album opens with Hauschka’s piano music in which you can hear pricking sounds of piano strings jumping like a stylus on broken records. Petre Inspirescu from Romania follows with a track of improvised piano playing around electronic insects’ hum sounds. Next comes the German charmer of Electronic Music, Roman Flugel’s track which is filled with luminous beads of light bouncing in the warm sunlight. The remix of “Nobody’s in This Classroom” by Terre Thaemlitz a.k.a. DJ Sprinkles is a left field mix which starts with murmuring sound of someone talking in a room, and gradually squeaking sounds of dolphins made by trumpets and glitchy electronic sounds start to collide in a pool of water. Recondite who wears Berlin’s dark ether, provides a track that sounds like meandering through a pitch black forest of an unknown planet. Lawrence known for releasing Deep House tracks from Smallville, tries for a warm ambient track, but he dares to have grinding beats to pound. One of my favorites in the album is the track by Vermont who has released an album of Japanesque Electronic taste from Kompakt. This track reminds me of “Luminescent Hotaru (the 3rd track of the album “Philharmony”)” by Hosono Haruomi (a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra). Koss, a project by Kuniyuki Takahashi plays a Neo Classical piano over the slight machinery hissing sounds, and John Roberts’ track of classical strings in harmony with sounds of oriental bells is very unique.

The album has been compiled for a Japanese label, thus it may be said that the album is coherent in the sense of being soothingly oriental.
