テクノの土着化

2010年に南アフリカの民族音楽などをベースにしたエレクトロニック・ダンス・ミュージックのバイブル的なアルバム「Shangaan Electro」がリリースされ、更にはそのリミックスをTheo ParrishやRicardo Villalobosなどの名だたるDJがリミックスをした、リミックスアルバム「Shangaan Shake」までもが2012年にはリリースされた。当時は、その何とも言えない土着感というか、呪術的なトランス感のある音楽が欧米のダンスフロアに一定のインパクトを与えたが、そのムーヴメントに倣うかのように、今、日本ではGorge（ゴルジェ）という、あるジャンルに注目が集まっている。そして、今回リリースされた、ダブステップ界のテクノ野郎とも言われた2562の新作について、日本では多くの場合、このGorgeと言う言葉が使われて説明がなされている。

Gorgeという音楽スタイルについての情報を探してみると、元はインドからネパールの山岳地帯のダンスミュージックらしく、きっと、その地域の土着的な音楽要素が現代風に進化したものだと思われる。オリジネイターはDJ Nangaという人で、彼の「Catcher In the Gorge」という曲が、この音楽スタイルの手本になっているようだ。ズブズブとしたベース音にタム・ドラムを叩きまくるということを基本にし、これがシカゴのフットワークさながらのダンス音楽的スリルを持っていたり、山岳地帯を思わせるゴリゴリとした音響やインダストリアルのようなハードさがあったりということで、なかなか面白味がある。

さて、それで、今回の2562のアルバムだが、確かに前作から3年のときを経て、だいぶ世の中を取り巻く音楽のトレンドも変わって来て、2562の音楽も当然、変化しているのがわかる。前作は、ダブステップというよりもミニマル・テクノの硬質感に走った感じだったが、今回は全体として、宇宙的でありながら、トライバルな雰囲気を漂わせているトランシーなベースミュージックのような妙な音楽になっている。そして、多分、この「トライバル」というところが、Gorge的なレトリックで語られているのかも知れないが…。アルバムの楽曲としては、宇宙空間を流れ星が流れているような音もあれば、ガムランのようなエスニックな楽器の音もする。アルバム冒頭はまるで、宇宙空間をモアイ象がゆっくり回転しながら遊泳していような感じだ。そんな奇妙さがありながら、3曲目の「Cosmic Bounce」は808 State「Cobra Bora」のようなレイヴな盛り上げで終わる寸止めディスコのような展開で、なんともたまらない。4曲目以降の曲は、ズブズブ感とトライバル感がAndy Stottの「Passed Me By」の感じに近いものがある。そして、このアルバムの中で個人的に一番好きなのが「Cauldron」で、それまでの一連のトライバルというかGorge風な雰囲気でまくしたてながらも、いっそうオリエンタルなメロディの中、いつのまにか天使が遠くに舞うようなシンセが全体をまとめ上げている。とまぁ、このように聴けば聴くほど、色々な要素が重なり合っている音楽に感じ、サイケに限りなく近づく感じすらするが、総じて言うと確かにGorgeかも知れない呪術的な感じと、Andy Stottのようなズブズブ感と、2562ならではのテクノ・センスがミックスされた、個人的には、当初の予想を超えて楽しめた1枚だと言える。これが、今後、何かの突破口になれば、より彼の音楽は楽しくなる。





Techno Turns to Indigenousness

In 2010, a collection of South African Electronic Dance Music which is a reboot of local folk music that has been derived from various indigenous music styles, was released as an album called, “Shangaan Electro”. Moreover, many of the tracks from it were remixed by many DJs including Theo Parrish and Ricardo Villalobos, resulting in a 2012 release of the album, “Shangaan Shake”, which is a collection of those remixed tracks. It should be said that such music had some kind of impact upon Western dance floors for its primitive and sorcerous charms creating a style of somewhat close to that of Trance Music. As if following this example, an Electronic Dance Music style called ‘Gorge’, is being talked much in Japan right now. And this new album of 2562 whom once known as one of the best Techno players of Dubstep clans, is being said to be a ‘Gorge’ album (at least in Japan).

So, what is ‘Gorge’ anyway? You may not find much information on it if you look through English websites, but few ideas could be found in Japanese sites. This dance music style is said to be founded in mountainous areas covering India through Nepal, and seems like it has evolved from indigenous musical factors that exist in such areas. The originator of the style is known to be DJ Nanga, and the track called “Catcher In the Gorge” is being accepted as the best example of ‘Gorge’ Music. My impression about this music is somewhat like being drowned in a flood of heavy bass sound, and being hit by rapid tom-tom drum beats; in some effect, it is close to Chicago’s Footwork combined with grinding sound effects of mountainous rocks and minerals, coming along with hardness of Industrial Music.

Talking about 2562’s new album, three years have passed since his last album’s release. It is true that so much have changed in his musical approach too. His last album, “Fever” was more like a Minimal Techno album of a Dubstep producer, but the music of the latest album “The New Today” seems like Bass Music heading towards Trance Music of cosmic atmosphere with a Tribal (≒ ‘Gorge’) essence in it. You can hear shooting stars falling and an ethnic gamelan (an Indonesian instrument) banging in many of the tracks in the album. The opening track is an Ambient one that makes me imagine Moai statues floating and rotating in starry Universe. The following tracks mostly continue to bear the same oddness, but I feel some Disco aspects in “Cosmic Bounce”, and it raves out with Bleeps that remind me of “Cobra Bora” of 808 State. The other tracks are of Tribal Dub orientation, and many sound like tracks from Andy Stott’s “Passed Me By”. My favorite track of the album is “Cauldron” which sounds outstandingly oriental for its melody, while other aspects of it are intensively influenced by ‘Gorge’; and an angelic synth ether gradually wraps up the whole of it as the track reaches to its end. As you listen to the album, you will find that so many musical aspects are being folded over each other creating a certain complexity which could even lead you to a psychedelic atmosphere. Yes, it could be something like sorcerous ‘Gorge’ that I find in it, and some tracks sound like Andy Stott being touched by 2562’s Techno charm, and I feel pretty much enchanted by this album more than I have expected. If this album of 2562 could become a breakthrough for something new to come, then I am sure that his music may evolve more interestingly.
