原子核物理学の世界

これまで、アルバムリリースはなくとも、90年代よりスペインを拠点に活躍して来たテクノ系プロデューサー、Christian Wünschの初のアルバム作品。自身のレーベルTsunamiでは、Tresor的なハードなミニマル・テクノで有名なOscar Muleroとの共作や、インダストリアルなRegisとの共作も出している。今回は、そのOscar Muleroのレーベルからのアルバムリリースとなる。

ざっと、このアルバムを聴くと、とても無機質で単調な印象があり、なかなかストイックなミニマル・テクノのように感じたが、この無機質さこそが、実は、このアルバムのコンセプトなのではなかろうか…と、ふと思った。アルバムのタイトルは「Internal Conversion」（＝内部転換）で、アルバムのジャケ・アートからしても、どうやら原子核の世界で展開されるストーリーをテクノ音楽として表現しているように思える。それなら、確かに無機質なのもわかる。そして、よくよくそれぞれの曲のタイトルを見てみると、それらも原子核物理学関連の用語でもあるし、アルバムタイトルの「Internal Conversion（内部転換）」をウィキペデアで検索すると、各曲の題名全てがそのページでも見つかる。そこで、以下では、曲のタイトルが示す物理用語の説明と共に、該当する楽曲の音のイメージを簡単に列挙してみた。

1　「Internal Conversion＝内部転換」　放射性崩壊の過程で電子が原子核から放出されること

鼓動とトライバルの中間音のような籠ったミニマル・ビートに、切れた電線が電柱の上から垂れ下がりながら激しくダンスをしているような音楽

２　「Flourescence＝蛍光」　Ｘ線、紫外線や可視光線が照射されて、そのエネルギーを吸収することで電子が励起し、それが基底状態に戻る際に余分なエネルギーを電磁波として放出すること

硬直ビートにアシッドかつエキセントリックな感じで、切れたピアノ線が乱舞するようなメロディ

３　「Auger Electrons＝オージェ電子」　高いエネルギーによって内殻電子が励起された原子から放出される、特定のエネルギーを持った電子

緊迫感があり、バウンシーなトラックで、ゴロゴロと大きな岩が土石流と共に転がり落ちるときの地響きを思わせるベースとビート。それに追いかけられるように斜面を弾んで転がる鉱物の欠片たち

４　「When the Process is Expected＝転換確率」　内部転換が起こる条件など

ゴツゴツとした火星の地面の上を宇宙探査機がキャタピラーで走行しているなか、不気味な宇宙風や隕石が行き交う感じの荒涼としたスペイシーさがある音楽

５　「Ionized＝イオン化」　電荷的に中性の分子を正または負の電荷を持ったイオンとする操作

真空のトンネルの中を未来の電車が走る。他車線の電車が通り過ぎ、それに追いつき、追いつかれということを繰り返すような感じ

６　「Radioactive Decay＝放射性崩壊」　構成の不安定性を持つ原子核が、放射線（α線、β線、γ線）を出すことにより他の安定な原子核に変化する現象

無数の球体が乱れ飛び、お互いにぶつかり合いながらバウンスする、まさに無数の核に変化が起きている様を思わせるような音楽

７　「Nuclear Transition＝核遷移」　核のエネルギーの状態が変化し、その結果、高エネルギーが放出されること

脈打ちながら、何かが変化しようとしているリピート音

８　「Graphene＝グラフェン」　炭素の同素体の一種であり、炭素原子1個分の厚さしかない平面状の物質でハチの巣状の結晶格子で構成されている

粘っこいが硬い塊がボタボタ落ちながらドンドン積みあがり、次第に巨大化し、後半になるにつれて重みの増す感じがし、終盤で鉱物を叩くような音もする

９　「Fixed Fraction＝不活性な断片」 内部変換された電子は不活性な崩壊エネルギーの断片を運び、特徴的な分離エネルギーを持つ

弾力のあるビートの世界の中、光線の束が屈折した時空を切る。不気味な営みを思わせる異空間

昔、「ミクロの決死圏」という映画があり、自分がミクロの世界に入り込むような気分になったものだが、このアルバムでは、ベースの音が実際には目に見えないエネルギーを表していたり、ビートが核や原子を模した球体を表していたり、シンセ音が電子そのものの動きや核世界の空間を表しているようで、目を閉じてアルバムを聴けば、核の世界に自分が入り込んだような気分になる。原子核物理学を学んでいる人には特に聴いていただきたいとも思う。





The World of Nuclear Physics

This is the first album release by Christian Wünsch, who has been quite active DJ-ing since 90’s mainly in Spain. From his own label Tsunami, he has released many 12 inches including the ones collaborating with Oscar Mulero and Regis, and this first album is being released from Oscar Mulero’s label, Pole Recordings.

The album sounds inorganic and even monotonous, coherent in the sense of being minimal and hard that reminds me of some mineral ores. And by noticing the album’s title being “Internal Conversion”, I have started to think that this overall inorganic feeling must be the concept of the album itself. Even from the cover art of the album, it may be well imagined that the Techno tracks of the album are trying to express the interactions taking place in the world of Nuclear Physics. The titles of all tracks included in the album are exactly the same with the technical terms and expressions used in the explanation given in Wikipedia for the term ‘Internal Conversion’. No wonder, they sound so inorganic. So then…I will list the actual technical meanings of the terms used for the titles of the album’s tracks, together with my personal impressions on how those tracks sound to me.

1. Internal Conversion: a radioactive decay process wherein an excited nucleus interacts electromagnetically with one of its electrons, and causing the electron to be emitted from the atom.

I hear sounds of chopped off electric wires dangling down from telegraphic poles standing in the atmosphere filled with heavy bass sound and heart beating sounds resembling Tribal beats.

2. Flourescence: the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation.

A boisterous dance by eccentric piano wires sounding Acid in hard beats.

3. Auger Electrons: electrons of such with characteristic energies are ejected from atoms in response to a downward transition by another electron in the atom.

A thrilling and bouncy track with ground rumbling bass and beating sounds of rocks rolling down in an avalanche. I can also hear particles of minerals being chased down by them.

4. When the Process is Expected: conditions for internal conversions to happen.

A track with a feeling of cosmic bleakness, in which I hear a space mobile moving on the rocky Martian ground by its caterpillar wheels, while space wind and meteors flow by in the dark sky.

5. Ionized: the process by which an atom or a molecule acquires a negative or positive charge by gaining or losing electrons to form ions.

A track in which futuristic trains run in vacuum tubes. I can hear trains in several lanes are chasing with each other.

6. Radioactive Decay: the process by which a nucleus of an unstable atom loses energy by emitting ionizing radiation (α-ray, β-ray, γ-ray) to obtain stability.

I can hear numerous balls of nuclei bouncing around and colliding with each other.

7. Nuclear Transition: an energy state of a nucleus changes resulting in an emission of a high energy.

Pulsing beats make me feel that something is transforming.

8. Graphene: one form of carbon having a honeycomb structure, made of carbon atoms and their bonds.

I can hear hard and sticky lumps of materials dropping down from somewhere, and piling up gradually creating a heavy material. In the end, I hear chunky sounds of minerals of some kind.

9. Fixed Fraction: Internally converted electrons, carry a fixed fraction of the characteristic decay energy, hence they have a discrete energy.

I can hear electric fluxes cutting through an eerie atmosphere of refracted ether, while elastic beats keep pounding in my ears.

I remember the feeling of putting myself into a microscopic world, when I saw the film, “Fantastic Voyage”. Similar to that, when you listen to this album, it is as if putting yourself into an atomic world where you can hear bass sounds as sounds of energy that you would never be able to notice in your daily life, beats as bouncing sounds of nuclei and electrons, and synth sounds as sounds of movements of electrons and others in the nuclear space scale. Just close your eyes and listen to the music; and you can see all of these. And I would strongly recommend for the people in the field of Nuclear Physics to listen to this album.
