優しい闘い

イギリス・エジンバラの新鋭プロデューサー兼DJのPeter OakdenによるFrederick名義でのデビューアルバム。あまり多くのリリースはないが、Peter Oakden名義での曲を聴くと、その多くは90年代初頭のTony HumphriesとAcid Jazzの中間を行き来するようなスムーズな雰囲気を持ちながらも、スペイシーさを散りばめたようなディープ・ハウスという感じがする。

このアルバムの1曲目でもあるイントロは題名が「An Artist’s Struggle」で、アメリカの黒人作家James Baldwinが1962年にニューヨーク・シティで行ったスピーチ（「The Artist’s Struggle for Integrity」というエッセイでもある）の音声をフィーチャーしている。煙った暗い世界で、何かが生まれて来るような感じで、彼の真っ直ぐな声が浮かび上がる。このスピーチでは、芸術家であるためには、全てのものを犠牲にする自覚が必要だということを語っている。続く「Episode of Love」も夕暮れのトランペットのような音が宇宙空間で流れるダウンテンポで、次のスペイシーな短めの曲につながる。続く「I’m Still Here」は、幕開けこそピンクレディーの「U.F.O.」のイントロみたいなキラキラ音だが、全体としては美しいピアノ音が漂うディープ・ハウスだ。途中で浮遊して来る男性ヴォーカルがBurial的なスモーキー・エッセンスを加えている。「Got No Time to Waste」は繊細なストリングスがエレガントなハウスナンバーで、続く「Be Free」はクリスタルなシロフォンが繰り広げるチルアウト系。「What Can I Be」は90年代初頭のThe Brand New Heaviesのスムーズさの部分だけを抜き出して、それをエレクトロニックなディープ・ハウスに仕上げたような良作。「The Blackness」はこのアルバムの中でも意味の深い曲のように感じる。フロア寄りのダブテクノ的な曲だが、強烈なのは偉大な黒人ジャズシンガーNina Simoneのスピーチ音声がサンプリングされていること。ここで、彼女は黒人であることの誇りを語っている。続く「Over You」は海の漣に太陽の光があたり、キラキラ輝くような美しいハウスナンバー。アウトロは物憂げなデトロイト・テクノのような感じで、フランス語のボイスサンプリングで終わり、再び闇に置き去りにされる感じになる。

James BaldwinやNina Simoneの強い黒人のイメージを引用しながらも、アルバム全体の曲は皆、柔らかく、電子音のエッセンスも各曲の中の「光」と「影」のコントラストを描いているようで、全体として引き込まれるような作品となっている。この作品を聴いて、ふと、デトロイト・テクノのオリジネイターが黒人でありながら、テクノを80年代にプレイしたときの意識に思いを巡らせてみた。そして、そのときの感覚に近いものをもし、Peter Oakdenもイギリス的な感覚で持っているのであれば、それは、ちょっとおもしろいかも知れないと思ってみたりもした…。





An Elegant Struggle

Peter Oakden a.k.a. Frederick, a DJ and producer from Edinburgh has been active since 2012, and this is his debut album. The tracks from preceding releases under his name, are cosmic Deep House tracks blessed with a smoothness such like drifting in between Tony Humphries and Acid Jazz of early 90’s.

The title of the intro of the album is “An Artist’s Struggle”, the track which features James Baldwin’s speech (New York City, 1962), which is also known as the essay, “The Artist’s Struggle for Integrity”. James Baldwin’s upright voice emerges out from murky atmosphere, as if something is starting to come out to the world. In this speech he says that, being an artist entails a total risk of ‘everything’. The following two tracks are Downbeat tracks having cosmic atmospheres, where you can hear twilight trumpets singing in one of them, “Episode of Love”. “I’m Still Here” is a Deep House track opening with twinkling sound effects, and it drifts off with beautiful melody of piano, until a Burial-like male vocal sweeps in creating a smoky ether. “Got No Time to Waste” is an elegant dance track with delicate string sections, followed by a Chill Out track, “Be Free” in which crystal xylophones ring alluringly. “What Can I Be” sounds pretty Electronic, but possesses the essence of smoothness like that found in the tracks of The Brand New Heavies in the early 90’s. I think that the essential factor of this album is included in the track, “The Blackness”. The track sounds like a danceable Dub Techno, but it features Nina Simone’s speech samples which are extractions of her words possibly related with the civil rights movement. The following track, “Over You” is a wonderful dance track which makes you see glittering wavelets of an ocean. The outro is a somber Detroit Techno fading out with a muttering French voice, the track which leaves us in the darkness again.

Although strong figures like James Baldwin and Nina Simone are being cited in the album, the album is very coherent in the sense of being delicate in its taste, and Electronic aspects found in all of the tracks do seem to create ‘light and dark’ contrast effect within each of the tracks, hence making the album absorbing. After listening to this album, I have started to think about the reason and the vibe that the originators of Detroit Techno have had when they, as being African Americans of the 80’s, have started playing Techno tracks. I wonder if Peter Oakden has the similar vibe as them, but in a British musical sense.
