Quantec (2008-2009)

Quantec＜初期＞

2008年にデビューアルバム「Unusual Signals」をダブテクノのレーベルEchocordから出しているQuantecはこれまで、ガチなダブテクノ・アーティストとして認知されて来たと思う。ただ、2012年にEchocordから離れてElux Recordsから「1000 Vacuum Tubes」を出して、その印象は一変した。これは「ポスト・ダブテクノ」の動きなのか？これまでにリリースされたアルバムを通して、Quantecの音楽のメタモルフォーゼを振り返ってみたい。

「Unusual Signals」（2008）
当時のダブテクノ・アーティストの多くが、ルーツ・レゲエを意識しながら、ミニマルの短調さと静寂のアンビエントの間を行き来しつつ、ドローンの濃霧へと堕ち迷い込んで行った。でも、このアルバムには、どこかレゲエ由来のファンク感やトライバル感すら感じる。

「Cauldron Subsidence」（2009）
確かにダブテクノに類する内容だが、アルバムの1曲目では、Boards Of Canada的エレクトロニカを霧の奥深くに感じる。前作と比較すると格段にベースが軽くなっていて、どうしてもダブテクノのストイックさが希薄に感じられる。しまいには、ちょっとハウシーになったりするものだから、何か変化の兆しを感じる。

これ以降、Quantecは「Echocord Jubilee Compilation」（ダブテクノ・コンピレーションとしては、最も豪華！）に参加したり、マイナーなダブテクノ・アーティストのリミックスをしたりという、すっかりダブテクノなコミュニティーの一員と化していた。ただ、ターニングポイントとなる、別名義でのふたつの作品がこれに続く。

　 　 　


Early Quantec

Quantec has released his first album, “Unusual Signals” in 2008 from Echocord. Since then, he is well known as a Dub Techno artist. However, when I heard his third album, “1000 Vacuum Tubes” which has been released not from Echocord, but from Elux Records in 2012, my impression towards the artist have changed slightly. Is anything like “Post-Dub Techno” movement starting in him? Let me examine how Quantec’s metamorphosis is going on.

Unusual Signals（2008）
Most of Dub Techno artists of that time were in to roots reggae, and at the same time, wandered in between Minimal Techno and Ambient Music, then eventually fell in to depth of Drone Music. However, in this album, I feel funky and tribal bounce which I guess, could have been derived from the artist’s love for roots reggae.

Cauldron Subsidence（2009）
This album also could be categorized as a Dub Techno album, but in the opening track, I hear Boards Of Canada far in midst of deep fog, thus leaving slight impression of Electronica in it. As a whole, bass sound is not so heavy as before, and does not sound so much like strictly ambient oriented Dub Techno. In the end, I even hear much of house beats, hinting some changes to come after this album.

After releasing these two albums, Quantec has been counted into a member of the album, “Echocord Jubilee Compilation” (an excellent Dub Techno compilation album), and has done several remixing works for underground Dub Techno artists. This way, it seems like Quantec has gained his popularity as a Dub Techno artist, but I think he meets a kind of turning point later, when he releases two albums which are not released under the name, Quantec.
