贅沢さの証明

先に発売された、Flying Lotusのアルバム「You’re Dead!」のスペシャル・エディション・ヴァイナル・ボックスセットに収録されていた同アルバムのインストゥルメンタル盤のみを日本限定でCDとして発売した。当初、このインスト盤は、フロア・ユースということで考えれば、確かにヴァイナル盤のボーナスLPとして付いていてもおかしくない感じではあった。ただ、それをCD盤で独立した形でリリースするとは、いかにも日本らしい感じもする。

どうしても個人的に思い出すのは、Y.M.O.の「浮気なぼくら」と、そのインストゥルメンタル盤の件。こちらの場合は、どちらかというと本来のY.M.O.であれば、インストゥルメンタル盤の方のようなアルバムを出していたはずだが、ファンの期待を裏切って、ヴォーカル入りのアルバムを先に出したという経緯がある。ヴォーカル入りの方も悪くはないが、インスト盤の方が自分は好きだった。で、Flying Lotusの場合は、そもそも本来のアルバムには豪華なゲスト・アーティスト陣がそれはたくさん参加して、盛りだくさん過ぎる内容になっている。そういう意味では、インスト盤でも全く質の高いフューチャー・ジャズのアルバムとして聴けるという贅沢さがある。そして、ヴォーカルがない分、アクの強さが軽減されて、アルバムに統一感のようなものが感じられるのもよい。ただ、元アルバムと聴き比べてしまうと、やはりヴォーカルの効果の偉大さを痛感することになる。それだけに、このアルバム本来のレベルの高さを認めざるを得ないということなのかもしれない。





The Proof of Lavishness

A Japan limited edition CD of Flying Lotus’ “You’re Dead!” instrumental version, a version which has been included in the Special Edition Vinyl Box Set of the album is now being released. In respect of making it convenient for DJs, providing an instrumental version as an extra of the album is quite understandable. However, I think that it is very Japanese in the way that this instrumental version is being released separately from the original album.

In analogy, Yellow Magic Orchestra’s album, “Uwakina Bokura” and its instrumental version came up to my mind. In this case, the instrumental version was more like the proper way how Yellow Magic Orchestra should sound like, but the band had released the on-vocal version prior to the instrumental version as to fail the fan’s expectations. The original version was not bad at all, but I have always liked the instrumental version more. And in Flying Lotus’ case, the original album is very rich musically, for so many talented musicians are taking part in the album. In this sense, it could be said that even though in the case of it being without vocals, it is lavish enough sounding like a Future Jazz album of a distinctive quality. Moreover, the exclusion of vocals seems to smoothen the album as a whole – or lessens peculiar factors in the album – in effect, making the album sound more coherent than the original version. Yet, if you compare the two versions, you would find out how compelling the featured vocals are in the original album; thus, have to approve that this album is essentially very high in its musical level.
