Lakkerはアイルランドの二人組で、最近ではR&S（初期のAphex Twinのリリースで知られるレーベル）より１２インチのリリースをするなど、活動が活発化しているが、2007年にリリースされた、この作品が彼ら唯一のアルバムでもある。逸話としては、Aphex Twinが彼らの曲を「Forbidden Fruits festival（ダブリン、2011年）」でプレイしたということが有名だが、彼らもまたAphexやAutechreに影響を受けているということが、このアルバムを聴くとよくわかる。ただ、今、聴いてもノイズやブレイクビーツ、インダストリアル、IDM、アシッドやグリッチの要素を実に多彩に織り交ぜていて古臭さをあまり感じさせない秀作だ。

このアルバムでよく見受けられるのが、インダストリアルやグリッチ的なノイズの中で展開される優しいピアノやシンセのメロディで、サティが徐々に狂って行くような、現代音楽的なカオスに向って行く感じがおもしろい。そして、それに加えて個々の楽曲を聴いてみると、「Sleep’s Daughter」では南国風のスティールパンの音が暴走をし出したり、「Foundation Noise」ではNew Orderの爽やかさが、アシッドの渦に巻き込まれたり、「Hardfield」ではハードなロック・ギターが背後で鳴っていたり、「Pyre」ではArcaばりのイルカのカナ切り声がしたりと、不思議な個性を放っている。ただ、それでいて、いずれの曲もまとまりがないわけではなく、むしろその多彩さが楽しめる、本当に飽きの来ないアルバムと言っていい。

このアルバムが発売されてから7年が過ぎたが、彼らのIDM的な意識を基本にしたエクスペリメンタルなアプローチは、今の彼らの作品にも息づいている。ここ数年はベルリンのKrake FestivalにLakkerとして、そしてソロのEomacとしても参加しているあたりが、個人的にもツボだったりするし、R&Sからリリースを開始した2014年以降の彼らの活躍に期待したい。





Welcome to R&S

Lakker (Irish duo) is being quite active recently, having their 12 inches being released from R&S, and I would like to mention that album “Ruido” is the only album that have been released by them in 2007. It is quite being said that Aphex Twin has played three of their tracks in Forbidden Fruits festival (Dublin) in 2011, but as far as their album is concerned, it cannot be denied that Lakker themselves are also being influenced by Aphex Twin and Autechre. Yet, the album does not sound so outdated for it intelligently interweaves factors of Noise, Breakbeat, Industrial, IDM, Acid, and Glitch in various phases.

Most of the tracks in the album consist of Industrial and Glitch noise sounds, while being characteristic in many parts by having silky piano and synth melodies drift through them gradually like Erik Satie’s music escalating towards an insanity of Contemporary Music. And in addition to this, some tracks do possess more attractive aspects: “Sleep’s Daughter” with steel drums going wild, “Foundation Noise” sounding like crispy New Order drowning in Acid, “Hardfield” with Hard Rock guitar whining in the background, and “Pyre” being filled with sounds of dolphins’ squeaking as in Arca’s album. However, none of those sound odd or incoherent, so they apparently add various colors to the album, in such respect making it sound rather fascinating.

It has been 7 years since its release, but I feel that their Experimental attitude with a basis of IDM, as found in their album, still lives within them. It appeared quite charming for me when Lakker and Eomas (1/2 of the group) played in recent Krake festivals in Berlin, and I am excited to hear more from them to follow this year’s releases from R&S.
