バルカンなデトロイト・テクノ

DJ 3000のレーベルMotech Recordsより2009年からリリースを重ねて来たSubotika。彼らは、セルビア出身ということで、アルバニア人の両親を持つDJ 3000と同じバルカン地域にルーツを持つテクノユニットと言えよう。バルカンと一言で言っても、あまり馴染みのない方も多いと思うが、正直、自分もそれほど詳しくはない。ただ、地理的に見ても、それは東南ヨーロッパという見方もあり、主にアルバニア、セルビアをはじめ、ギリシア、クロアチア、コソボ、ブルガリア、マケドニア、モンテネグロ、そしてトルコの一部といった国々から成るようだ。中世時代にはヴェネツィアやオスマン帝国もこの地域に領土を持っていたといい、中世ヨーロッパの流れを汲みつつも、イスラムの文化的な影響を少なからずとも受けている印象がある。実は、坂本龍一の「左うでの夢」も、イスラムとヨーロッパの間を行き来しているような雰囲気を持つアルバムで、「ヴェネツィア」という曲もあることから、バルカン的なのではないかと個人的には思っている。また、DJ 3000の「Galactic Caravan」（2009）も実にエスニックなテクノ・アルバムになっていて、これを聴いたときにもバルカン的なものを感じた。

そして、このSubotikaのアルバムはジャケットのデザインや、ユニットのロゴデザインを見てもDJ 3000の最近のアルバム「Besa」に勝るとも劣らないエスニック感だ。ただ、アルバムに収録の楽曲が「Galactic Caravan」ほど、エスニックかと言うとそうではなく、Underground Resistanceというか、Submerge Recordingsのデトロイト・テクノの香りがプンプンする。このあたりもDJ 3000に近いものがある。3曲目の「Prozivka」は明らかにエスニックなメロディのテクノになっていて、7曲目の「Folklore」もトルコのベリーダンス的なリズムで展開する曲となっている。方や、6曲目の「Space Nomad」ではDerrick Mayのシルクのようなシンセ・メロディにModel 500のようなエレクトリックなファンク・フレーズが合流し、アルバム最後の曲「In Detroit」はSystem 7/Derrick Mayの「Mysterious Traveller」のオマージュのようにも聴こえるデトロイト・テクノ・ナンバーだ。ということで、このアルバムはGalaxy 2 Galaxyの「Astral Apache」やURの「Baghdad Express」のようなエスニックなデトロイト・テクノが好きな方にはオススメだろう。








Detroit Techno of the Balkans

Since 2009, Subotika has been releasing records from DJ 3000’s label, Motech. Given that the duo are from Serbia, it may be said that they are alike DJ 3000 (whose parents are from Albania), in the sense that they play Techno and have their roots in the Balkans. Including myself, many of you may not be so familiar with the term, the Balkans. The geographic area of it is said to be around Southeast Europe, and it includes countries such as Albania, Serbia, Greece, Croatia, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Montenegro, and a part of Turkey. It is also said that the Republic of Venice and Ottoman Empire had their territories in this area during the Middle Ages. Therefore, I have an impression that this area still maintains cultural influences from medieval Europe, and also is being influenced by Islamic culture at the same time. I personally thought that Ryuichi Sakamoto’s “左うでの夢 – Left Handed Dream” is an album that expresses the mood dwelling somewhere in between European and Islamic world – the album even includes a track called “Venezia” (which means the Republic of Venice); so, it seems to me that the album is somewhat of a Balkan taste. Moreover, DJ 3000’s “Galactic Caravan” (2009) consists of quite a number of Ethno-Techno tracks that sound Balkan to me also.

So looking at Subotika’s album’s art works and the band’s logo, I should say that they are very much of Ethnic taste, as much as it is in the case of DJ 3000’s latest album, “Besa”. However, tracks included in the album are not so heavily Ethno-oriented as compared with in the case of “Galactic Caravan”. Many of them sound rather like Techno tracks being influenced by Underground Resistance, or may be close to Detroit Techno of Submerge Recordings; but still, in a way close to DJ 3000’s music. The album’s third track, “Prozivka” is obviously an Ethno-Techno track, and “Folklore” pumps the beats of Turkish belly dances. On the other hand, I hear Model 500-ish Electronic Funk phrases merge in to Derrick May-ish silky synth sounds in “Space Nomad”, and the album’s closer track, “In Detroit” is a Detroit Techno track that sounds like a homage to “Mysterious Traveller” of System 7 and Derrick May. As a whole, I would say that this album may be considerable for the ones who favor Galaxy 2 Galaxy’s “Astral Apache” or UR’s “Baghdad Express”.
