近未来ポップ音楽

ヴェイパーウェイヴと呼ばれる音楽がジャンルとしてどれほどのものかは定かではないが、個人的には80年代、90年代的な、もしくはサイバーパンクなどのイメージ・音楽（その多くはネット上での「拾い物」）をまるで玩具で遊ぶかのように、現代的な表現に取り入れている感覚のものだととらえている。対して、かつて80年代～90年代にアシッド・ジャズというものが流行り、それは、50年代～70年代のジャズ周辺のレア・グルーヴを当時のダンス・ミュージックに取り入れたりしていた。このように、過去の遺産をそのときどきの感性で取り込む流れというのは、これまでも繰り返されて来た。そして、その根幹には、いつの時代にもきっと過去のダサいものを現在の解釈で表現するという遊び心があるからなのだと思う。

さて、Giant Clawのこのデビューアルバムも、きっとヴェイパーウェイヴのジャンルとしてカウントされる作品であろうが、そのジューク/フットワーク譲りの加速感と情報量の多さと、サウンド・コラージュの質とセンスの良さには驚かされる。ルネッサンス時代を連想させる讃美歌や合唱のようなものや、クラシック音楽的なもの、はたまたマライア・キャリーや’N Syncのようなポップス、うなるR&Bヴォーカルなどを切り刻んでは、ゴムのように伸ばしたりねじったりして、粉々になった電子音楽情報と一緒にミキサーに放り込み、最終的には謎の立体オブジェのような音楽を作り上げている。ArcaをR&B的にしたような曲もあれば、かなりレフトフィールドなトラップに聴こえるものもある。ただし、どの曲も、コンシューマリズムを揶揄することを愉しむヴェイパーウェイヴより一歩先に駒を進めたような、エクスペリメンタルでありながらも良質なポップ音楽という絶妙な均衡を実現している。あらゆる音楽要素は確かに高速ミキサーにかけられてはいるのだが、各要素のおいしいところはうまい具合に生かされ、繋ぎ合わされて、最終的には美しいフォルムをなしている。実に巧妙なトラックが収録されたアルバムになっている。








Future Pop Music

I am not sure whether Vaporwave could be counted as a musical category, but my understanding is that it is in some sense like importing imageries and music of the 80’s~90’s or of cyberpunk and other related factors (mostly picked up from the internet) to today’s field of expression in a manner as if playing with them like toys. While, back in the 80’s~90’s, Rare Grooves around the Jazz of the 50’s ~70’s have been brought in to the field of dance music of that time, and thus has evolved the category, Acid Jazz. This way, the past’s legacies are frequently being utilized within each cultures of each times. And it may be said that playful minds of all times, basically love expressing the outdated imageries by interpreting them in their present terms.

Giant Claw’s debut album could be counted as one of Vaporwave’s, but is brilliant for its sound collage quality and for its Juke/Footwork oriented restlessness which accelerates bunch of musical information. It is like having chopped chunks of hymns and choirs of Renaissance, Classic music, Pop music sang by Mariah Carey and N’Sync, and glorious cries of R&B’s are all stretched out and twisted like plastics or rubbers, and are being thrown in to a mixer with crushed pieces of Electronic music bits, then mixed up finally coming up with a music being shaped like an undefinable 3D figure. I find R&B flavored Arca, and also Trap music that sounds quite Leftfield. Yet, while most of Vaporwave’s are making fun of consumerism, all of the tracks in the album are a step ahead from them, for they are in exquisite balance in between Experimental music and fine Pop music. It is true that a diversity of musical factors are all being mixed in a whirlwind mixer, but the best portions of them are well selected and are being clipped together ending up creating configurations of beauty. Ingenious indeed.
