ハッピー？

ドイツ・ハンブルグのSmallville Recordsの作品のジャケットは結構、こういうコミックっぽい感じのものが多い。そして、このアルバムもジャケットのグラフィックからは、あまり想像できないテクノ的な音楽。第一印象としては、ピュアなデトロイト・テクノの繊細で美しい旋律をディープハウスの緩やかなグルーヴに乗せている感じ。ただ、聴き続けると、だんだん、Drexciyaのような奇妙な迷路のようなメロディ展開に迷い込む。ただ、アルバムのタイトル曲でもある「Flocking Behavior」は、無数の光の泡が空間に溢れ飛ぶような曲で、ドリーミーでもあり、妙な高揚感を喚起する曲だ。個人的には、ファレル・ウィリアムズの「Happy」と双璧なハッピー感のある電子音楽に感じて、これ1曲だけのために、このアルバムを買ってもよいと思えるくらい好き。

最近は、すっかりインダストリアルなハード目な音ばかり聴いていたので、こういうアルバムを割り込ませるのも良いもので…。Smallvilleの作品では、STLのアルバムを聴いたが、それもどこか、ダウンテンポであったり、ディープハウスの暖かみの中に、テクノが悪戯のように曲をかき回している感じがあった。そういうところは、レーベルのカラーなのかも知れない。ちょっと、これから注目したいと思う。





HAPPY?

Many of the art works of Smallville Records’ items are like this, featuring comic-like drawings. It is difficult to imagine that this album is a Techno oriented album, just by looking at the graphic work of its cover. When listening to this album, I felt pure and delicate melody flow of Detroit Techno riding on Deep House’s slack groove, and then gradually straying into Drexciya-like labyrinth. Most of the tracks are of such style, but one outstanding track is the album’s title track, “Flocking Behavior”. This track has slightly dreamy feeling, but at the same time it definitely has this uplifting feeling as if you can see rainbow light bubbles spurting out and dancing all over. Say it has a ‘HAPPY Level’ comparable to Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” in this Techno track.

My recent music choices were of rather industrial and dark taste, so it is quite soothing when listening to this kind of bouncy music. I recall it was quite ago when I have listened to an album of another Smallville artist, STL. The album consists of Down Tempo and Deep House tracks with Techno and Glitch buzzing and stirring around them. I am not sure whether this kind of musical air is characteristic of this label or not, but I am quite fond of it by now.
