ドイツ・ポップスを愉しむ

祖父がオルガン職人で、その影響を少なからずとも受けて音楽やアートの世界に進んだと言われるDaniel Herrmannの音楽プロジェクトFlug 8。このアルバムのジャケットとタイトルを見ればクラフトワークを連想しないはずもなく、つい買ってしまった。もちろん、Daniel Herrmannはドイツ人で、このアルバムの中にもこれまでのドイツのポップミュージックの歴史絵巻を見るような曲がたくさん含まれている。

アルバムは青空を見上げながらのんびりドライブをするようなクラウトロック寄りのクラフトワーク的な曲「Zeitraffer」で幕を開ける。打って変わって、続く「Konsumprodukt」はインダストリアル・ミュージックをスチールの小箱の中で鳴らしているようなビートに掃除機が無数のナノ・マシーンを吸い込んで行くようなカオス的電子音が乱舞する曲だ。そして、アルバムのタイトル曲の「Trans Atlantik」はまさに、クラフトワークの「ヨーロッパ特急」の続編でも作りたかったのではなかろうかと思えるような曲で、そこでは70年代の高揚感というよりは、現代の憂鬱を感じさせるメロディが反復する。続く「Watch Me Grow」と後半に登場する「On a Spear」ではデンマークのMono GirlというBjorkを思わせるような唄い方をする女性ヴォーカルが参加をしていて、若干Bjork風な暗さのある、クラウトロック・ベースの曲となっている。「Musik Aus Metall」もタイトルからしてクラフトワーク的だが、アインシュテュルツェンデ・ノイバウテンのN.U. Unruhが参加した、軽めのメタリック音が基調のテクノ・ナンバー。個人的に好きなのは「Höhenkammer」で、テックハウスのビートにプログレ風なトリップ感が融合した感じが個性的だ。「Zukunft」はメタリックなビートで若干アインシュテュルツェンデ・ノイバウテンのような攻撃性を感じさせるが、女性のヴォーカルが絡み、幻想的な一面も作っている不思議な曲。そして、最後の「Zeckenwalzer」は牧歌的な民族音楽の雰囲気のある曲だが、曲の途中でいきなり暴力的なヘビービートが乱入するのがおもしろい。アルバムのほとんどの曲はクラウトロックの影響を色濃く受けているが、そこに、クラフトワークのエレクトロやアインシュテュルツェンデ・ノイバウテンのインダストリアルのエッセンスやテクノやハウスの要素も加わり現代的な側面も見せている。ただ、あくまでドイツ的なポップス様式は崩されていないところに、彼のドイツ・ポップスへの深い愛情を感じることができる、そんなアルバムだ。








Enjoy German Pop Music

Daniel Herrmann a.k.a. Flug 8, whose grandfather had been an organ builder, may have been influenced by the grandfather in some way, for starting his carrier as an artist and a musician. Just by looking at his album’s cover art and the title, I was reminded of Kraftwerk, and have ended buying this album. It is obvious that Daniel Herrmann is a German, and I find that listening to this album is just like exploring through the history of German Pop music.

The opener track, “Zeitraffer” is like a track by Kraftwerk on the side of Krautrock, and makes you feel like driving under a clear, blue sky. In comparison to this, the following track, “Konsumprodukt” makes some beats that sound like Industrial music being confined in a small steel box, and then bits of Electronic sounds start to dance in a chaos where numerous nano-machines are being sucked by a vacuum cleaner. The self-titled track, “Trans Atlantik” is like a sequel of Kraftwerk’s “Trans Europe Express”, but the melody here does not ripple in expectation for the future as it was in the 70’s; instead, it is a depressive melody that echoes today’s life. The following track, “Watch Me Grow” and “On a Spear” (which comes later) feature a Bjork-like female singer from Danish project Mono Girl, and they both have this dark atmosphere which is like that found in some of Bjork’s songs. “Musik Aus Metall” reminds me of Kraftwerk again just from its title, and is a metallic Techno track which features Einstürzende Neubauten’s N. U. Unruh. My favorite track, “Höhenkammer” is an impressive track in which Tech-House beats are combined well with hallucinating ether of Progressive music. “Zukunft” sounds even more of a wonder, for it features fairy-like voices despite of its harsh metallic sound structure that reminds me of Einstürzende Neubauten. The closer, “Zeckenwalzer” has an idyllic folk song-like atmosphere, but is pretty stunning when heavy beats break in right in the middle of the track. It is clear that most of the tracks in the album are being deeply influenced by Krautrock, but by having some aspects of Electro music (of Kraftwerk) and Industrial music (of Enstürzende Neubauten), coming along also with essences of Techno and House music, the music of the album sounds fairly modern. However still, the basic style of German Pop music is kept consistent in this album, saying that his love for it is pretty strong.
