異次元に彷徨う痛み

毎度、お騒がせという印象のあるビヨークだが、このアルバムにも色々とツッコミどころがあるのでご安心のほど。そもそも、本来のアルバム発売日より2か月前に、ネットで全曲がフルでリークしたことを受けて、急きょiTunesで発売開始となった段階で、なんともはやという感じではあった。そして、このアルバムに収録されている9曲のうち6曲は10年以上もの間、パートナーだったMatthew Barneyとの別れに絡んだ恨み節的な歌を生々しく唄っているもので、これまでの彼女のアブストラクトな歌の世界とは対照的なのも特異な点だ。そして、2014年にFKA Twigsの楽曲プロデュースをし、自身のデビューアルバムも、アンダーグラウンドな音楽好きのリスナーから称賛されたArcaとインダストリアル畑のThe Haxan Cloakがアルバムに参加したことが個人的には、注目のポイントでもあった。FKA TwigsのArcaによる楽曲を聴いた段階で、彼がビヨークの楽曲に絡んだ場合、どんな感じの音になるのかは、おおよそ想像のできる範囲でもあったと思う。ただ、期待されたのは、Arca独特の異次元的空間感覚を持った音楽が、ビヨークのアブストラクトな世界観と化学反応を起こしたときの狂気に満ちた世界のはずだった。

とはいえ、ビヨークはビヨークであり、彼女に浸食したり、彼女を打ち消せるものは、この世には存在しないということが、このアルバムを聴くと歴然とする。ただ、確かにArcaが作曲に携わっている「Family」と「Notget」が個人的には、このアルバムのハイライトのようにも感じる。「Family」では、破局という局面でビヨーク本人とパートナーと子供の3人の家族の状態がどういう状態なのかについて唄っているが、楽曲そのものの構成が非常にドラマチックであり、Arca独特の歪みを帯びたアブストラクトなダイナミズムを感じさせる名曲となっている。そして、続く「Notget」は、ビヨークが破局について自分なりに気持ちの整理ができた様子をうかがわせている内容の歌詞になっていて、「後悔をすれば　心の成長を拒むことになる　この痛みを取り除かないで　これが癒しのチャンスなのだから」と唄っている。このなんとも痛々しい詩がArcaの不気味で‘ホモジェニック’的なオリエンタル感のある曲の中で唄われることのミスマッチという名のベストマッチ。ビヨークの大ヒット主演映画「ダンサー・イン・ザ・ダーク」のBGMを全部Arcaの「XEN」に差し替えて見てみたら、きっとこのアルバムと同じような気持ち悪さを体感できるだろう。女性の生々しい感情が異次元へとよじれた電子空間に放り込まれたようなグロテスクさとでも言おうか…。








Pain that Wanders in Extra-Dimensions

Bjork, controversial as always, and not to worry that her latest album is also well furnished with points to pick on. In the first place, the leaking out trouble of the album that has happened on the internet two months prior to the official release date, was one of the flub ups. Moreover, the album looks quite peculiar in the sense that six out of nine tracks of it deal so plainly with her personal resentment relating to her breaking up with Matthew Barney, an over a decade partner, despite most of her past works usually had more abstract and artful expressions in contrary. Another interesting point is that Arca (known for producing FKA Twig’s songs last year and has gained much interest from underground music listeners at the time when he has released his debut album) and The Haxan Cloak from the field of Industrial music have joined in for the production of the album. At the point when I have heard Arca’s song by FKA Twigs, it was quite possible for me to imagine how it would sound like when Arca and Bjork join up. However, I presume that what has been expected more was like some bizarre music resulting from Bjork’s abstruse macrocosm reacting with the extra-dimensional atmosphere which may well be created by Arca.

Yet, if you listen to this album, you would find that Bjork could never be less than Bjork and would not be eroded or be turned down by anything. But still, I feel that Arca’s tracks such as “Family” and “Notget” are the highlights of the album. Bjork sings about the situation related with her broken family (which means the relationship between her, the ex-partner, and her daughter) in “Family”, and Arca shapes it in to a dramatic epic of crooked abstractness and dynamism. In the following track “Notget”, Bjork sings, “if I regret us / I’m denying my soul to grow / don’t remove my pain / it is my chance to heal”, as to express that she has come to a stage of accepting the sorrowful break up. The lyric sounds painful indeed, so it matches badly, but in a wicked way, with Arca’s music filled with eeriness and ‘Homogenic’ orientalism. Just imagine watching Bjork’s well known film, “Dancer in the Dark” by having its BGM being replaced by Arca’s “XEN”; you will find a similar awkwardness in this album. It sounds grotesque as if hearing a female’s raw emotion being thrown in to an electronic field which twists in to a dimension of unknown.
