Drexciyaの魂

私がここ十数年、ずっと愛してやまないレーベルがオランダのDelsinである。1990年代が終わる頃にダブテクノの霧が世界を覆うようになり、オランダの地でIDMの息吹もそれに呑み込まれ、Delsinが光を放った。そのDelsinを長く支えて来たアーティストの1人がBoris BunnikことConforceである。デビューアルバムである「Machine Conspiracy」は彼にとって最初にして最高の作品とも言える。ただ、だからと言って後の作品がそれ以下であるということでは決してない。むしろ、あのデビュー作が彼の全てを含んだ種のようなもので、以後のリリースはそこから芽吹いたフレッシュな葉であったり、香しい花であったり、美味な実であるかのようなのだ。Conforceであり、Delsinであり、ダブテクノであり、IDMであることは常に変わらない。ただ、そのとき、そのときで生きる環境によって、葉の形や、花の色合い、実の風味に影響が出るのだろう。そんな、存在であり続けているのがConforceなのだ。

今回のアルバムもある意味、インダストリアルの空気に触れたConforceが投影されているかのように思える。ただ、それ以上にDrexciyaの深海の世界観が全体を支配しているのも事実である。まず、幕開けの「Tidal Gateway」で、X線菅の中で電子が飛び交うようなイメージが湧く。ただ、このイメージはやはりDrexciyaの世界観に似ていて、やがてそれが深海なのだということに気づく。そして、更にはインダストリアルの粉塵がわき上がり、いつしか踏切の信号の音がけたたましく反復され、恍惚の縁へと意識が追いやられる。このように、ここの暗く淀んだ世界は暴力的に振動する。しかし、どこか遠くでいつも光を微かに感じることができるのが、深海の魅力でもある。続く「Fauna Of Estuaries」では、遠くでアジアの鎮魂の鐘が鳴るのが聞こえ、「Harnessed Life In Programmed Form」では、電子や光子が春の木漏れ日を呼び寄せるかのように乱舞する。「Autonomously Surpassed」でも不気味さの背後にチップチューンが煌めく。「Inland Current」では、電磁波の礫が一方向に流れてゆき、それはまるで海中を一直線に泳ぐ、銀色に輝くイワシの大群のようだ。このように、重く、深く、煙る世界の中で、その奥底に魂を導いてくれるような光の筋をいくつか見つけ出すことができるのが、このアルバムの魅力だ。Conforceは淡く光るDrexciyaの魂をデトロイトテクノとインダストリアルの親和性の中に埋め込んだのかもしれない。そう感じさせる一枚だ。












The Spirit of Drexciya

For this ten-odd years, my love for this Dutch label, Delsin has never ceased. At the end of the 90’s, the fog of Dub Techno draped over the world, inevitably swallowing even the breath of IDM which grew in Netherland, so made Delsin glow within. Boris Bunnik, a.k.a. Conforce is one of the artists who long benefited this label. His debut album, “Machine Conspiracy” is the first and the best album released under this alias, but I am not saying this to underestimate his other following works. It would be rather said that the first album is like a seed that contains every possible aspects of the artist, and the following works are like fresh leaves, sweet-scented flowers, or tasteful fruits growing out from it. Conforce is always as is; a Delsin who plays DubTechno and IDM, whereas shapes of leaves, colors and aroma of flowers, and tastes of fruits correlate with the surrounding environments that change as time goes by. This is how Conforce exists since then.

This latest album may well show reflections of Conforce being touched by the air of Industrial music. However, what more dominates over it is Drexciya’s macrocosm that lies in the depth of the water. As you listen to the opening track, “Tidal Gateway”, you can image electrons colliding in cathode tubes. This resembles to what I find in Drexciya’s works, and it soon made sense to me that it is also just like the image that you are being put down deep under the water. Then gradually, smokes of Industrial dusts start to grow, as repetitious signal bell sounds usher you to the rim of a trance. This way this world of dull darkness rumbles brutally in this album. However, the good part of being underwater is that you could always sense a faint light stream coming from some afar. In the following track, “Fauna Of Estuaries”, requiem chimes for Asian souls hum, and in “Harnessed Life In Programmed Form” electrons and photons rave around praying for an early spring sunlight to shine in to the darkness. Moreover, fragments of Chip Tunes twinkle behind the eeriness of “Autonomously Surpassed”. In “Inland Current”, gravel of electromagnetic fluxes gush in one direction, just like a school of sardines so swim in the sea. The world you are being submerged when listening to this album is so dense and obscure, but you will soon find a sheer light that leads your soul to the further depth of the water. It is possible to think that Conforce has buried a pale light of Drexciya’s spirit under affinities between Industrial and Detroit Techno. This is what I really sense from this album.
